A call for new trial for officers in Prude case and an end to Person in Crisis team, which they say is set up to fail.
At least 100 people here now, kind of spread out on Parcel 5. Antonia Wynter calls the spot a “cemetery” in the middle of the city, surrounded by high-rent lofts.
Ricardo and Asa Adams and Mary Lupien taking the microphone now, calling for citizen action
Lupien talking about police reform plan City Council is working on this month
Assemblyman Demond Meeks talking now, calling for anti racist activism and bolder action regarding disciplining & terminating officers
I’d estimate about 150 people now
March starting going west on Main Street
St. Paul Street
The transit center is locked up
The 3W bus from Lyell Ave to Walmart sitting in the transit center bay has become a focal point for some reason
“The only thing people understand is violence and commerce. We’re not being violent but we are disrupting commerce in this city.”
Set up on St Paul in front of transit center. “It’s a small inconvenience not to be able to take the bus. Daniel Prude cannot take the bus because he’s dead; RPD killed him.” Antonia Wynter
Police cruisers have blocked off the street and there’s a drone overhead, but I don’t see any officers
Saying the protest is targeting RTS because it’s an extractive entity that takes money from Black & brown people and removes it from city. “There’s no reason RTS shouldn’t be a free service.”
Now turning down East Ave
East and Alexander, still maybe 100 people
Walking on East past Oxford Street and still going. A large contingent of people in cars as well as walkers
We’re down to Culver Road now and still going. To Wegmans possibly?
Wegmans. Doors locked.
Anger at @Wegmans for use of police for security and closing other city locations. They’re setting up tables for snacks in the parking lot road.
There are a bunch of shoppers inside Wegmans who aren’t being allowed to leave.
Craig Carson: “We’re more than just taxpayers in their capitalist system; we’re human beings and we demand to be treated as such.”
Ashley Gantt: “the officers that killed Daniel Prude don’t live in our community; they live in the suburbs and out here.”
Pizza is coming soon, I’m told
East Ave between Winston and Colby is also closed by the way. Cruisers there are the only police I see.
Passing the @DandC coverage baton to @nataliarodmed for the afternoon, on site at Wegmans.
