Boris Johnson promises a "fitting and permanent memorial" to all those who lost their lives in the pandemic.
Boris Johnson says there are "distinct signs of a third wave" on the European continent.

Then rattles through "tough" borders measures in place here - which of course only came in on February 15.
PM asked what he wishes he'd done differently.

"In retrospect, there are probably many things that we wish we had done differently at the time."

But reverts to asymptomatic transmission line - nothing about delays in decision making which, of course, are on him.
PM asked if he should have locked down sooner.

"We took all the decisions with the interests of the British people foremost in our hearts and in an effort to protect the public".

Hmm...

PM says (again) there will be an inquiry into the Government's handling of Covid - but nothing (again) on when it will be.

"Doubtless there will be a moment to review and to properly learn lessons for the future".
Boris Johnson says it's "just too early to say" whether summer holidays will be allowed - but he'll give foreign travel update by April 5.

But he warns: "There are other European countries where the disease is rising. Things certainly look difficult for the time being".

Boris Johnson, asked by @bbclaurak what went so wrong, replies: “I’m deeply sorry for the lives that have been lost. I take responsibility for everything the Government has done. We did everything we could and continue to do everything that we can".
Chief Medical Officer Chris Whitty warns death toll is still going up.

“Unfortunately we’re going to see quite a lot more deaths over the next few weeks before the effect of the vaccine is felt”.
Asked by @PaulBrandITV about 100k Covid death toll, PM says he could “exhaust the thesaurus of misery”.

Not sure that’s *quite* the tone the bereaved might hope for.

He adds: “It’s an appalling and tragic loss of life”.

NEW Boris Johnson reveals the new more infectious "Kent" variant also has a higher degree of mortality.
Sir Patrick Vallance says new variant is 30-70% more transmissible than old variant and can affect anybody of any age.

No evidence of increase in mortality of those in hospital with Covid BUT new strain appears more deadly to *all* those who test positive.
For an average man in his 60s, of every 1000 infected with new strain around 10 people will die. For new variant, around 13/14 will die.

BREAKING: Joe Biden becomes President of the United States of America.

Rest of the World: Thank God.
US President Joe Biden: "At this hour, my friends, democracy has prevailed".

Words that have been used countless times before, but after events earlier this month are more significant than ever.
Applies to this side of Atlantic too.

“Politics doesn’t have to be a raging fire destroying everything in its path, every disagreement doesn’t have to be a cause for total war, and we must reject the culture in which facts themselves are manipulated and even manufactured.”
