Israel woke up this morning to the horrifying reality of Kahanists (Jewish Supremacists) being elected to parliament.
We were horrified, but not surprised. Anyone familiar with the reality in the city of Hebron could see this coming from miles away.

In February, Netanyahu brokered an agreement between Kahane's disciple Ben Gvir, and Smotrich, another settler extremist, to ensure they would make it into the Knesset. But the political legitimacy given to Kahanists began long before Netanyahu made sure to have them elected.

It began when Govt after Govt bowed to the Kahanists' demands in Hebron and throughout the oPt. It began when violence against Palestinians was met with no resistance and became the easiest way to occupy more and more land.

Politicians fail time & again to call out violence, even when directed at security forces. Today's attack on Border Police was the latest incident. The establishment wrote them off as rotten apples while the rotten apples became part of the establishment.

It appears Israelis are willing to put up with Kahanists in the Knesset because they don't know what happens when they're left to flourish. That's what happened in Hebron, a large Palestinian city whose city center was turned into a segregated ghost town by a few hundred settlers

One of the major catalysts for this process in Hebron was the Goldstein Massacre, when a religious settler shot dead 29 Muslims while they prayed. Ben Gvir revered Goldstein to the point of hanging a picture of him on his living room wall.

Hebron isn't just another settlement; it's the Kahanist model for Israel—a Jewish settlement in the heart of an Arab city, with Jew-only streets and laws, armed to the teeth, boiling over with violence. Instead of seeing Kahanists for what they are, many preferred to ignore them.

For the millionth time: what happens in the occupied territories is important—not just for the Palestinians. The silence about what goes on there has led to the creation of a monster, affecting us all. It's about time that silence was broken.
