THREAD: Since January, I've been cooking up with @vivian, @C_C_Krebs, and the @AspenDigital team a phenomenal diverse, multi-disciplinary commission to tackle the nation's rising challenges to truth, journalism, and democracy and disrupt the flood of mis- and disinformation....
Today, we announced the full, six-month "Commission on Information Disorder," including its three co-chairs — @katiecouric, @C_C_Krebs and @rashadrobinson — and 15 commissioners. Here's the powerhouse lineup of thinkers, tech leaders, journalists, and gov officials:
Our founding co-chair is @C_C_Krebs, who battled disinformation first-hand at @CISAgov and helped ensure that the 2020 elections were the safest and most secure ever.
Disinformation and misinformation uniquely hits and challenges underrepresented communities and raises tough questions about civil rights, race, and equity, so we're particularly excited @rashadrobinson, president of
@ColorOfChange, is also serving as a co-chair:
Our third co-chair is the legendary @katiecouric, who brings a groundbreaking career and lots of thinking about quality journalism, which will be a huge part of how we bring back evidence, reality, and facts into the national discourse.
We're thrilled to have @Marla_Blow as a commissioner, whose leadership at @CNTR4growth and soon at the
@SkollFoundation will provide a vital perspective on mis- and disinformation at the community level and how social entrepreneurs can help.
My friend @AaronDFordNV, the Nevada attorney general, has real-world experience fighting for election integrity and against COVID-19 falsehoods—and actually is testifying today before Congress on domestic extremism.
Sue Gordon served as the nation's top career intelligence official and once led the CIA's Information Operations Center.
The ever-brilliant @yasmind, from @jigsaw, has dedicated her career to the information disorder crisis and countering online radicalization.
We are honored to have Prince Harry, The Duke of Sussex and co-founder the Archewell Foundation, which is raising awareness around the root causes of some of the world’s most pressing challenges, including across the online world.
Former Texas GOP Rep @HurdOnTheHill, one of the founding cochairs of the @AspenCyber Group alongside @LisaMonaco, spent his time in Congress at the forefront of questions about security and emerging technologies.
One of the most incisive voices on the First Amendment and free expression, @JameelJaffer, brings a wealth of critical experience and wisdom. (Spoiler Alert: This issue is a lot more complicated than Section 230.)
.@Kasparov63 has dedicated his post-chess career to fighting propaganda and authoritarian regimes, most recently as the founder of the @Renew_Democracy Initiative.
Another one of our @AspenCyber Group members, @HerbLinCyber, was a key instigator of this commission and brings a wealth of expertise at the intersection of cybersecurity and information disorder.
We're thrilled to have @KathrynAMurdoch, who co-founded the Quadrivium Foundation to address issue related to democracy, technology and society.
.@Safiyanoble centers her academic research on the design of digital media platforms and their impact on society—critical to understanding and solving for info disorders—plus she wrote an AWESOME book on this: ALGORITHMS OF OPPRESSION. bookshop.org/books/algorith…
Next up is @dkroy, whose work at @MIT Center for Constructive Communication applies machine learning and human-machine interaction design to solve for societal issues.
And of course, no group on this topic would be complete without the brilliance of @alexstamos - hacker, tech security pioneer, and founder of @stanfordio, and a founding member of the @aspencyber Group.
University of Washington's @katestarbird is one of the foremost experts on how disinformation spreads, and she lives at the intersection of technology and society.
Finally, I've long admired the work and model of @amzam, as a reporter/editor/publisher, both nationally and locally. She knows every aspect of the news business and is killing it at @19thnews.
That's The @AspenInstitute's new Commission on Information Disorders! You can follow along on our work over the next six months at @AspenDigital or at our website: aspeninstitute.org/programs/aspen…
I should note two BIG credits: First to the brilliant @firstdraftnews @cward1e, who coined the term "Information Disorder," and, second, to the generous and wonderful @craignewmark, who is funding the commission as part of his efforts to build the "Arsenals of Democracy."

A thread of personal privilege: Last month, my @aspendigital colleagues and I lost one of my absolute favorite people @SavillaPitt to pancreatic cancer. She was just 36—far far far too young—and had just begun her career in tech policy. She was just the greatest.
To honor her legacy, the @AspenPolicyHub is now recruiting for our inaugural Savilla Pitt Memorial Fellowship, looking for techies who want to make a difference in DC or specifically interested in issues of tech and the environment.
The @AspenInstitute Savilla Pitt Fellowship is a paid fellowship or exec ed opportunity. If you're keen to make a difference in DC, APPLY before March 1.

@BetsOnTech, @vivian, @David4C1, me, & our @AspenCyber team will make it special. More details here: aspentechpolicyhub.org/savilla-pitt-m…

LAST NIGHTLY READING THREAD OF 2020: As a final #GMGReads for this generally awful year, here's the pile of books of I've gathered this fall that I'm excited to read in 2021... :

THREAD: As 2020 winds down, I wanted to share a #GMGReads list of my favorite books I read this year; it's an odd list, as I've read almost nothing for pleasure since June—I've been consumed my own book research—and I've struggled to read fiction concentration-wise this year...
This year's list is oddly filled by books about science and the history of science—paleontology, ichthyology, epidemiology, and more—but I guess it's a good year to be interested in (and trust!) science. So here's my (unordered) list of the top books I read this year:
1) George Packer's rakish biography of Richard Holbrooke OUR MAN is hands-down one of the best biographies I've ever read: bookshop.org/books/our-man-…

THREAD: Every death from Covid-19 is a tragedy—all 340,000 Americans so far—but it's hard to ignore that the Republican Party has become a literal death cult, all to assuage Trump's ego. Every state and federal elected official to die so far from Covid-19 is a Republican....
According to @ballotpedia, Republican Congressman-Elect Letlow is the first congressional member or member-elect to die from Covid-19, but there have been numerous state legislators to die too, all Republican....
Republican Rep. Bob Glanzer, of the South Dakota House of Representatives, died in April: ballotpedia.org/Bob_Glanzer

In my look at Trump’s lame duck and his possible “pardon-a-palooza” I outlined three categories of pardons we’ll see .... politico.com/news/magazine/…
The first is exactly like this Mike Flynn pardon—people caught up in the Russia investigation, from Paul Manafort to Stone to Flynn.
The second category is close campaign aides and advisors, from people like Steve Bannon to Rudy, who might face legal jeopardy or who appear under investigation. And then maybe his own family.
