The Jerusalem Declaration on Antisemitism (JDA), despite its omission of representative Palestinian perspectives, provides an alternative to the fraudulent IHRA definition in the fight against anti-Jewish racism, discrimination and hostility.
The JDA largely respects freedom of expression related to the struggle for Palestinian rights, including BDS advocacy and opposition to Zionism & to Israel’s regime of occupation, settler-colonialism & apartheid.
Definitions alone cannot dismantle antisemitism. Progressives must commit to dismantling anti-Jewish racism alongside all other forms of racism and oppression. We endorse the following publication from progressive Jewish partners.
The JDA’s omission of any mention of white supremacy and the far right, the main culprits behind antisemitic attacks, inadvertently lets the far right (most of which is deeply antisemitic yet loves Israel) off the hook.
Coupling antisemitism with opposition to Israel’s regime of apartheid and settler-colonialism is unjustifiable. In no other context is there a similar attempt to police speech critical of a state -- why should Israel be an exception?
