Four sisters got off a plane from El Salvador recently—Genesis, Adriana, Amy, and Abigail Martínez—and hugged their father in Los Angeles for the first time in six years. bit.ly/2P8gEkv
The sisters arrived through the Central American Minors Program. Established in 2014, the Obama-era program allows certain children with a parent living legally in the U.S. to apply for asylum without making the dangerous journey across Mexico. bit.ly/2P8gEkv Image
The way these girls entered the U.S.—on a commercial flight, passing easily through Customs—is far from the reality of the 15,000 migrant children currently held in government custody, including over 5,000 in overcrowded border patrol holding cells. bit.ly/2P8gEkv
The Trump administration cancelled CAM in 2017, but the Biden administration reinstated it earlier this month.

While the program helps some, critics say it will have limited effect at the border, as it doesn’t apply to most children fleeing their homes. bit.ly/2P8gEkv Image
When Biden took office in January, his administration began allowing children to enter for the first time since Trump effectively closed the border in March of 2020.

Just last month, over 9,000 unaccompanied children arrived. bit.ly/2P8gEkv
The Biden administration is under fire for what many see as an unprepared, inhumane response. Most children end up in overcrowded border patrol facilities and government-run shelters, where capacity has been stretched thin by COVID and the record arrivals. bit.ly/2P8gEkv
Even for children admitted under the CAM program, many aren’t allowed to stay forever.

Children who don’t qualify as refugees may receive humanitarian parole instead, and must leave when that parole runs out, often after two years. bit.ly/2P8gEkv Image
That includes the Martínez sisters.

In two years, Genesis, Adriana, Amy, and Abigail will have to return to El Salvador, where they now have no parents waiting for them.

"I worry about what is going to happen," their dad Jesús told VICE News. bit.ly/2P8gEkv Image

NEW: Mexican drug cartels have turned once-thriving Guadalajara into a war zone.

The discovery of dozens of grisly “extermination houses” and mass graves has set the city on edge. bit.ly/3eF7k2b
The rise of Mexico’s Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) over the past decade ties directly to the downward spiral of Guadalajara and the rest of the state into violent disorder. bit.ly/3eF7k2b
Even after the original Guadalajara Cartel fragmented around 1990, the city of Guadalajara remained a relatively safe haven for narcos to live and raise their families, and especially to launder money. bit.ly/3eF7k2b

NEW: The Trump administration agreed to delay the deportation of up to a dozen women who alleged medical abuse at an ICE facility in Georgia, according to a court filing. bit.ly/33d1WwB
“This is an acknowledgement by the federal government that it is critically important that these women have a meaningful opportunity to participate in the federal investigation related to medical atrocities at Irwin," said a lawyer for two of the women. bit.ly/33d1WwB
One of the women compared her visit to Dr. Mahendra Amin to being raped. Another says she was told that her “uterus was as big as a melon” and that she would never have children. bit.ly/33d1WwB

“I had no choice. I mean, I, I had a choice. I could have sat there and watched them kill a friend of mine of color. But I wasn't going to do that.” bit.ly/3lNpiQV

Kendrick Ransome started out farming a few years ago with just a hoe, a rake, and a shovel. bit.ly/2pKn64J
He could have used support getting his hog and vegetable business off the ground, but he was wary of asking institutions for help. “My big brother told me, ‘Stay away from loans,’” said Ransome. bit.ly/2pKn64J
In 1925, most farmers in his rural hometown of Edgecombe County, North Carolina, were black. But now, the 26-year-old is an anomaly. bit.ly/2pKn64J

“There’s a strong argument that the president’s conduct violates federal campaign finance law, although I wouldn’t say it’s a slam-dunk case,” said Richard Hasen, a specialist on election law at the University of California Irvine. bit.ly/2o27gB4
Trump’s interaction with the Ukrainian president could potentially count as soliciting a bribe, former prosecutors said. bit.ly/2o27gB4
