Lil Nas X being unapologetically BLACK & GAY, giving queer kids someone to look up to AND pissing of homophobes in the process >>>>>>> #CallMeByYourName#MONTERO
Since ppl are being intentionally dense about the message of the music video🙃, let’s address it. The video is a metaphor for his journey with accepting his sexuality. He uses the Christian creation story as an analogy.
The snake imagery represents his 1st gay attraction, which he thought was an evil temptation.
This scene represents the internal battle he had with himself about accepting his sexuality. He’s arrested in pink attire by versions of himself dressed in blue attire, representing masculinity vs femininity. The crowd represents his own opinions plus the opinions of others.
Someone in the crowd throws a stone at Lil Nas which ends up “killing him”. This represents letting the opinions of others impact your health & well being. I also interpreted it as the deadly violence that LGBTQ ppl have to face.
Upon his “death” and ascension to heaven, Lil Nas realizes that “God” didn’t take issue with his sexuality. This represents Lil Nas coming to terms with his sexuality.
His descent into hell on a stripper pole while donned in stilettos represents Lil Nas embracing all of who he is & deciding to face his personal demons.
Satan is representative of all his detractors & critics, particularly the ones who are publicly homophobic but secretly DL/closeted. Giving Satan a lap dance equates to the times he used to let closeted homophobes use him for him sex.
Snapping Satan’s neck & taking his horns is representative of Lil Nas shutting out his detractors, embracing who he is & taking control of life.
The lyrical content of the song is just as important as the music video. Lyrically, #CallMeByYourName is about a gay protagonist being in love with a person who hasn’t come to terms with their own sexuality.
Correction: That was not a stone, y’all😶. That’s a whole ass BUTT PLUG and I’m JUST NOW noticing 💀It’s represents gay secs in case you were wondering🤓
So in conclusion, the #CallMeByYourName music video sees Lil Nas X subvert Christian theology & imagery to create an allegory about the journey one goes through to come to terms with their sexuality. Groundbreaking Black gay excellence.
@LilNasX I hope you see this🥺Lmk if I’m right or completely off in my analysis lmao😅
THIS IS IMPORTANT AS FUCK. It’s a common experience of many lgbt kids to grow up in a religion that preaches homosexuality is a sin. I can speak from my own experience about how the Black “Christian” church had me hating myself as a teen.
