A 911 call led Ottawa police enter wrong home while responding to a distress call about a potentially suicidal man. They entered the Ngoto home before dawn and left the family shaken. More context in this thread
Nadia Ngoto is a single mom of four sons who fled domestic violence years ago. They lived in shelters for years. She’s had bad experiences with police. Her teenage sons have been racially profiled and are often stopped by police.
But despite the odds Ngoto is a survivor. She now works at Harmony House the shelter that helped her. Her oldest son Ozzy volunteers there. Her kids are thriving at school, making their own computers. But now they feel violated again. They just moved here 2mths ago.
First @OttawaPolice say they announced themselves before they entered. The family of 5 and their 70yo roommate did not hear police until they were in the house. Police say they walked in an unlocked door. Their idea of announcement was knocking on a child’s window waking him up
Ozzy Ngoto, 21 , was awakened by the sound of footsteps on wood floors. When he opened his bedroom door he saw a police officer carrying a “big ass” long gun and several others in his living room. He thought police hit the wrong address for a drug bust
Mistaken raids happen more often than we know. google.ca/amp/s/www.cbc.…
But police were there to respond out of concern, to keep a potentially suicidal man from harm. Which had Ozzy wondering -“How does all these officers de-escalate mental distress?”
The Ottawa Police say this wasn’t a dynamic entry. They say their tactical officers did not enter the house but arrived later to support patrol officers. Here’s an email exchange with OPS media relations. Despite having a mental health unit- they do not respond to emergency calls
Nadia Ngoto believes this call has the potential of going sideways. Her 11yo son was told not to move. What if her 21yo didn’t react calmly? Would someone be arrested? Someone hurt? These are legitimate fears of a family who have experienced racism. It’s also backed by stats
@OttawaPolice have now sent three officers (one Black male officer and two female officers) to visit the family and apologise for the mistaken 911 call. It’s unlikely they would do this if there wasn’t media attention on the story. Read it here: cbc.ca/news/canada/ot…

Ottawa police chief temporarily bans no-knock dynamic entries used to prevent "disposable evidence" or in search warrants for drugs and child porn | CBC News cbc.ca/news/canada/ot…
This line doesn't indicate much of change in practice:
Sloly said "they will continue to be allowed in situations to preserve evidence as long as either the chief or a designate — which can include a platoon commander, inspector, or senior officer — approves one"
And if Ottawa Police are still assuming every suspected drug dealer owns a gun, then nothing really changes. Because officers are still considered at risk..and no-knocks should be done for officer safety.
Thread: The Ontario Sunshine List is out. I wanted to know the salaries of Ottawa Police officers suspended with pay for alleged misconduct against women. Of the 8 officers we name in this story, 5 earned more salary in 2020 despite being suspended. newsinteractives.cbc.ca/longform/ottaw…
Deputy Chief Uday Jaswal was suspended in March 2020 - but he earned $44,000 more in 2020 than the previous year. His annual salary last year was $261,635 compared to 2019 salary of $217,448. He's facing Police Service Act charges re: sexual harassment against 3 female officers
Cst. Eric Post was suspended with pay in June 2018. He pleaded guilty to 5 criminal charges related to violence against four women.
His salary increased while suspended.
2019 earnings: $105, 076
2020: $112,206 cbc.ca/news/canada/ot…
A thread on the lack of transparency @OttawaPolice Board Meetings. Prior to COVID, reporters could scrum @OPSChiefSloly and Chair @dianedeans or any other officer present before or after the monthly meetings. For nearly a year that has not been possible. That should chang
Because of COVID, OPSB meetings are rightfully held over zoom to keep everyone safe. Only public delegations and board members get to ask questions. Journalists do not. For nearly a year, police have mostly been sending out responses over email through media relations.
Here's an example why. Take a look Monday's Ottawa Police Board meeting agenda app05.ottawa.ca/sirepub/mtgvie…
So many issues-from internal sexual violence investigations to SIU updates will be addressed. But reporters can't ask questions. There is also one GLARING omission
Yesterday, I spoke to the parents of a 23yo man who fell from a 12th floor window following a no-knock police raid. Anthony Aust was out on bail, with a GPS tracking bracelet. His mom said he was depressed, fearful of police and jail cbc.ca/player/play/18…
Raymond Aust, says when he saw this video of the raid captured by the home security camera- he knew wanted to make it public. He says police should know barging like this into a 12 story apartment endangers the public. He wonders how many bystanders are traumatized by these raids
You should know that when Ottawa Police raided the 12th story apartment there were 5 other people inside. Anthony Aust, his 94yo grandma, 68yo Dad w/ heart condition, 12yo brother, 13yo sister, and Aust’s girlfriend. The 12yo was in the room when he jumped
“It's time to crack down on anti-mask bigots in Ottawa “
@JoelHardenONDP asks some good questions.
Why aren’t anti-maskers who endanger other people’s health / safety penalized?
Is that a balanced approach to free speech? ottawacitizen.com/opinion/harden…
Other similar cases involving @OttawaPolice come to mind. Why not ticket the anti-masking harassers camped at the National War memorial? google.ca/amp/s/www.cbc.…
Why do police break up a group of activists who write protest messages in chalk? But do not arrest racist, far right conspiracy theorists who accost politicians and journalists?

I'm worried that the Ottawa Police is tearing itself apart.
There is a disgusting video circulating that likens OPS Chief Peter Sloly to Hitler, because of his comments on systemic racism. 👇The video is offensive and beyond the pale google.com/search?client=…
I'm not going to link to the video - but it compares Sloly's handling of a racist meme to Hitler's last days in power. How can anyone think it is reasonable or even funny to compare a racist meme to a genocidal regime? cbc.ca/news/canada/ot…
I don't know who created the video. But it does seem to be someone in the service. The Ottawa Police Service from the executives, to Superintendents, inspectors, staff sgt., sgt. to constables need to condemn this. So does the board. This crosses the line.
