As a very happy publisher on Ghost, I talk to people every day these days who want to move their newsletter from another platform. So I figured I'd put together a thread of FAQs
(I have no affiliation with Ghost, just a happy customer + believer in independent publishing)
First, I want to say generally that Ghost's Ghost(Pro) product is just implausibly good, and takes care of everything you need out the box -- email-sending (included in the price), payments (via your own Stripe account, they take 0% fees), website, everything
Basically, because Ghost is open-source, you *could* go host it elsewhere, use your own email-sender, etc. But unless you're a developer, just ignore that: Ghost(Pro) takes care of everything, exactly like [that other newsletter platform you want to leave], right out the box
Ok! FAQs ahead
Q: How hard is it to migrate?
A: very easy. Ghost has a service called Concierge, available with most annual paid plans, where they will move your subscriber list + Stripe payments + all your posts. Your subscribers won't notice the move, and neither will you.
Q: Pricing
A: basically, Ghost charges fixed fees & takes 0% of revenue. If you're running a paid membership site with ~20 or more paid members, Ghost is often cheaper than the alternative; the more you make, the better the value. Many publishers will save 50-90% by switching
Q: Pricing, pt 2
However, if you're a free newsletter + previously spent $0 to send, Ghost will cost more. No way around that.
But to be frank: sending emails costs money, and anyone who offers you unlimited free sending is either burning VC money, abusing your data, or both.
Q: how do I know that Ghost will stick around?
A: this one I find kind of funny. Ghost is eight years old now! It's got a profitable, sustainable business model! It's structured so the org can't be sold! It's open source! Ghost is in it for the long haul, like you
I'll add to this thread as new questions come in -- if there's anything you'd like to know, my DMs are open. If you're running a professional newsletter and care about independent publishing, I'm always happy to chat.
