The Martyr's Memorial, is a monument designed by Iraqi sculptor, Ismail Fatah Al Turk and is found in Baghdad, Iraq. It is dedicated to the Iraqi soldiers who died in the Iran–Iraq War.
However, now it is generally considered by Iraqis to be a commemoration of all of Iraq's martyrs not just of the Iran–Iraq War.
Contruction started in 1981 and its official opening was in 1983.
The monument consists of a circular platform 190 meters in diameter in the center of an artificial lake. On the platform sits a 40-meter tall split turquoise dome, which resembles the domes of the Abbasid era.
It is estimated that between 250,000-500,000 Iraqis died in this one conflict. And since the 2003 invasion of Iraq sources suggest 2.4 million Iraqis have died due to conflict.
