Matthew Frank is picking up where he left off with Donald Williams this morning. Williams, an experienced MMA fighter, witnessed what happened on May 25, 2020. #DerekChauvinTrial

Watch Live:
Eric Nelson objects as Williams starts to say something along the lines that he saw "someone like [him]" in that situation. Frank moves on to other questions... #ChauvinTrial
Frank asks Williams if he heard any bystander threaten the safety of the police officers. He says no, but did tell someone to go back into the store when things started getting heated. #DerekChauvinTrial
Nelson objects twice to Donald Williams answer to Franks question about what his emotions that led him to speak out.

Nelson objects again when Williams answers a question about checking Floyd's pulse. #DerekChauvinTrial
Frank: At some point, did you make a 911 call?
Williams: That is correct. I called the police on the police.
Frank: And why did you do that?
Williams: Because I believe I witnessed a murder.

#DerekChauvinTrial
Frank is going to play audio of Williams 911 call on May 25, 2020. #DerekChauvinTrial
Williams wiped at his eyes as he listened to the 911 call he made last year. #DerekChauvinTrial
Williams says he felt threatened by Officer Thao when he was on the phone with 911 dispatch.

Eric Nelson is starting his cross examiniation. #DerekChauvinTrial
Nelson is asking Williams about "flow wrestling" and his experience in the sport.

Nelson describes it as a sport. Williams says it's a lifestyle.
Nelson is focusing his questioning on weight classes in wrestling/jiujitsu. #DerekChauvinTrial
Eric Nelson is demonstrating with his hand as he explain "air chokes" and asking Williams about the ability to render someone unconscious. #DerekChauvinTrial
A lot of back and forth between Nelson and Williams as they talk about air/blood chokes and try to get on the same page. #DerekChauvinTrial
Nelson is asking about if someone who is rendered unconscious by a choke, comes back to consciousness and starts fighting again. Williams says he hasn't experienced it, but has witnessed it during MMA fights. #ChauvinTrial
Nelson is now turning to Williams experience as a bouncer.

Asks if he's ever had to deal with a crowd or an upset crowd. He says definitely. #ChauvinTrial
Nelson asks Williams that he wouldn't know that an ambulance had been called 3 minutes before he got there...and that it had been called to step it up 2 minutes before he arrived. #ChauvinTrial
Matthew Frank objects to Nelson asking Williams that he wouldn't have know what happened 15 minutes before.

It was overruled.
Frank says he's going to "object to this form of cross examination." Judge Cahill overrules.
Judge Cahill had to step in during the cross examination. Williams has told Nelson that he "can't paint me out to be angry."
Nelson is pressing Williams about whether he continued to engage the officers.

Nelson: And it was over and over and over and over again, right?
Williams: Because I wasn't being heard.
Nelson: It's a yes or no question, sir....
Williams: Yes, because I wasn't being heard.
Matthew Frank for the state is back redirecting Williams after the defense wraps up.

Frank starts by asking if Williams has ever had an opponent who was handcuffed.
Nelson objects to Franks question about whether Williams saw a blood choke applied to the one side of the neck last year. Cahill overrules.
Frank asks about Williams experience in de-escalating crowds during his work as a bouncer, then turns the questioning to whether he saw that last year.

Nelson objects twice. Cahill calls for a sidebar. #ChauvinTrial
Frank starts saying "when you're dealing with a crowd as a security guard..." and then Nelson objects. Cahill overrules, but later tells Frank to move along... #ChauvinTrial
Nelson has objected multiple times to Frank's questions. Frank says "Your honor..."

Judge Cahill: No argument objections. I'll ask for a sidebar if I want. #ChauvinTrial
And Cahill just called for a sidebar after another round of Frank's questions. #ChauvinTrial
Nelson: Can you tell me about any of the conversations that you had, as you were being rendered under unconscious in any of your fights?

Frank objects. Cahill allows Nelson to re-ask and Williams can answer if he can remember.
Nelson asks again and Williams says no.

Frank is back on.
Judge Cahill excuses Donald Williams.

The next witnesses will not be shown on video because of their age. We'll be able to hear them. #DerekChauvinTrial
Audio cuts out as they get the new witness on the stand. They'll provide their name and spelling off audio for the court. #ChauvinTrial
Jerry Blackwell is now up asking questions for the state of MN.

This witness identifies herself as 18-year-old Darnella.
#ChauvinTrial
They're showing Exhibit #13. It's a picture of a squad in front of Cup Foods with two young people in front. Darnella identifies herself as one of them. #ChauvinTrial
Blackwell calls up this video. Darnella says she got her cousin inside of Cup Foods because she didn't want her to see what was happening. #DerekChauvinTrial
Blackwell: What was it about the scene that caused you to come back?

Darnella: It wasn't right, he was, he was suffering. #ChauvinTrial
We can't see Darnella on the stand, but it sounds like her voice is shaky and she's sniffling. #ChauvinTrial
It sounded like Darnella was getting emotional when Blackwell started asking her questions related to this image. #ChauvinTrial
Blackwell is now asking Darnella to identify anyone she might know in this screen grab from what looks like body camera video. She added the red arrows on the left. #ChauvinTrial
Judge Cahill calls for a sidebar after another round of objections from Nelson. Cahill had asked Blackwell to rephrase without leading. #ChauvinTrial
Blackwell asks this witness to mark the woman who identified herself as a firefighter. #ChauvinTrial
In recess until 11:15 a.m.
They're back on audio.

Blackwell asking questions again.
Blackwell asks Darnella to point out Derek Chauvin. He stands up and removes his mask. #DerekChauvinTrial
Blackwell is done. Eric Nelson is starting his cross examination. #ChauvinTrial
Jerry Blackwell objects to Nelson's question about whether she could hear the officers talking. Cahill allows her to answer. #ChauvinTrial
Nelson asks about Darnella recording the video and that it went viral. Says, it changed your life?

Blackwell objects, but Darnella answers yes. #ChauvinTrial
Blackwell is back up redirecting Darnella. Starts with Nelson's questions about her walking at night and feeling safe in her neighborhood.
This is one of the last Q's asked.
Nelson: Would you agree that you had previously told members of the prosecution team that at night, the neighborhood can be a little bit more dangerous?
Darnella: Some nights. I mean, wasn't really known for
violence like every night.
Blackwell has asked about her answers to Nelson in regards to Q's about cars on the street and now about the video she recorded. #ChauvinTrial
Blackwell: Would you tell the ladies and gentlemen, how your viewing experience and what happened to George Floyd has affected your life.
Darnella: When I look at your Floyd, I look at, look at my dad, I look at my brothers... because they are all black.
Darnella becomes emotional as she answers that question, saying she's stayed up apologizing for not doing more on May 25, 2020.

#ChauvinTrial
Next witness is up. Again, not being shown on video and only identified by first name in court. I won't use their name if they are still underage.
This witness is really young. She's in the third grade. #ChauvinTrial
Blackwell is taking the witness step by step, asking basic questions about May 25, 2020. Then asks her to identify if Derek Chauvin is the same man in the picture. #DerekChauvinTrial
Blackwell is done. Nelson doesn't have any questions for the minor witness. #DerekChauvinTrial
Back in session now with a new witness. She's an 18-year-old who drove to Cup Foods on May 25, 2020. #ChauvinTrial
This witness is struggling. Sounds like she's crying. The attorney (not sure what her name is, but let me know if you know) tells her to take her time. #ChauvinTrial
They're going to play a video now and have the witness explain what she sees, etc.

Quick sidebar. #ChauvinTrial
Witnessed circle the car she was driving before getting out and recording the police incident. #ChauvinTrial
Similar to yesterday, they split her bystander video to play alongside the wider city camera. Again, this video might be difficult for folks to watch. #ChauvinTrial
Witnessed circled herself in the city camera video.
You can hear the current witness and Donald Williams (he testified earlier) in the video she recorded. Can also hear the firefighter ask to check George Floyd's pulse. #ChauvinTrial
Witness: Yes, because time was running out or that it had already.

Erin Eldridge: What do you mean by time was running out?

Witness: That he was going to die. #ChauvinTrial
Eldridge asks about the witness' increasing concern.

Witness: At that point, I kind of knew...

Eldridge: You kind of knew what?

Witness: That he was dead or not breathing. #ChauvinTrial
You can see Thao's hand in front of the witness' cellphone while trying to keep folks off of the street.
Witness says she felt numb, didn't know how to feel, "a lot to take in" after May 25, 2020.

Nelson is up now. #ChauvinTrial
Nelson: Would you disagree with me if I told you, you said, I even saw them check his pulse multiple times before the ambulance got there.
Witness: I would not agree with that.
Nelson: You would not agree with that.
Witness: Yeah, because I don't remember. #ChauvinTrial
Nelson slid the transcript under the plexiglass for the witness to read. This is a transcript of her interview with BCA agents. #DerekChauvinTrial
Nelson asked witness if she was angry and if the others in the crowd were angry as well.

She said yes, and "I would assume so."

The state is back. #DerekChauvinTrial
Eldridge now asking about witness being angry. Now asks if she threatened anyone, attack or hit anyone. She says no, felt like they couldn't do anything. #ChauvinTrial
Next witness is up now. I believe this is the last witness today who won't be shown on camera.

But first, they're taking a quick break. #DerekChauvinTrial
They're back now.

Erin Eldridge tells this new witness that they can take it slow and if she needs a break they can take one.

This witness is 17-years-old. #DerekChauvinTrial
Eldridge: Why don't you tell the jury why you're here today.

Witness: For George Floyd.

Eldridge, again, is bracing the witness before asking questions about May 25, 2020. #DerekChauvinTrial
Eldridge asks about what the witness saw when she first got on the scene. This witness was with the previous person. #DerekChauvinTrial
Eldridge asks why she decided to get out of the car.

Witness says it was "kind of just a gut feeling" and that it sounded serious. #DerekChauvinTrial
Derek Chauvin appears to be writing on his notepad while listening to this current witness describe what she saw and heard last May. #ChauvinTrial
Witness says she saw ex-officer Thao push a witness back onto the sidewalk. Says she didn't see bystanders be physical and they only used their voice. #DerekChauvinTrial
Eldridge: How would you describe his body movement or body language at that point?
Witness: kind of angry....
Eldridge: So I'm going to stop you there. But tell me what he was doing with this body.
Witness: He was like digging his knee...

#DerekChauvinTrial
Witness says she saw the paramedic "signal" Derek Chauvin to get up off of George Floyd. #DerekChauvinTrial
Witness tells Eldridge that she didn't know for a fact that George Floyd was dead, but she "had a gut feeling." #DerekChauvinTrial
Eric Nelson asks for a moment before he cross examines this witness. #DerekChauvinTrial
Turns around and says he has no questions for this witness. She's dismissed. #DerekChauvinTrial
They're taking another break before the state calls its next witness to the stand. #DerekChauvinTrial
Matthew Frank is back up and is playing video before bringing in the next witness. #DerekChauvinTrial
Now playing audio of a 911 call made by Genevieve Hansen, a firefighter who was heard asking officers to take George Floyd's pulse. #DerekChauvinTrial
They're now calling Genevieve Hansen to the stand. #DerekChauvinTrial
Hansen is wearing her Minneapolis fire dept. uniform. She's been a firefighter for about two years. #DerekChauvinTrial
Hansen is walking the state through what she would do if she had to use CPR in her work. #DerekChauvinTrial
Frank asks Hansen about how many medical calls she is called to that involves an unconscious or pulseless person.

Hansen says she works in an area where MFD is frequently called to overdose cases. #ChauvinTrial
Hansen says she heard someone screaming "that they were killing him." Says that's when she realized something more was going on and she asked another bystander what was going on. #ChauvinTrial
Hansen identifies herself as the woman in the red circle. She walked over from the Speedway across the street. #DerekChauvinTrial
They're still playing the video recorded across the street from the Cup Foods. Frank is waiting before asking Hansen another question. #ChauvinTrial
Hansen describes what she first saw when she walked up to the scene. She says, "In my memory, for whatever reason I remember seeing for on his body, and we know now that it was three." #DerekChauvinTrial
Hansen says the first thing she noticed was George Floyd's face was "smashed into the ground" and looked "puffy and swollen."

She says she identified herself as a first responder because of her concerned about his medical needs. #DerekChauvinTrial
Hansen says she noticed some fluid coming from the area around Floyd.

"And in a lot of cases, we see a patient release their bladder, when they die. I can't tell you exactly where the fluid was coming from, but that's where my mind went." #ChauvinTrial
Hansen explains (based on her experience) how she knew Floyd had an "altered level of consciousness." Hansen says she has used physical stimuli (sternum rubs, etc.) and says Chauvin's knee on Floyd's neck would cause a reaction. #ChauvinTrial
Hansen is now describing her interactions with Thao at the scene. Says she was worried that he wouldn't believe that she was a firefighter.

"He said something along the lines of, if you really are a Minneapolis firefighter, you would know better than to get involved."
Hansen tears up during this portion of the questioning. Frank has been asking her what she wanted to do to help, how she felt, etc. #DerekChauvinTrial
Frank: You didn't pay close attention to Mr. Floyd at some point because you knew he was unconscious.

Hansen: Needed medical attention. There was no question about that. #DerekChauvinTrial
Hansen says "memories of witnesses are never going to be as good as a video" in response to Frank's question about why she recorded it. #DerekChauvinTrial
Frank asks what was going through Hansen's mind when the ambulance pulls away and she's left standing there.

Hansen: "I'm not sure. I think I probably was in disbelief..." #DerekChauvinTrial
Nelson objects to Frank's question about "whatever the end result you could have tried to help." Cahill has him rephrase the question. #DerekChauvinTrial
Hansen called 911 after the ambulance left. Says she wished she had called immediately, but it hit her after things calmed down. She says she just wanted to report it. #DerekChauvinTrial
Hansen says she knew two of the responding firefighters.

Frank wraps up his questioning. Nelson will cross examine next. #DerekChauvinTrial
Eric Nelson notes that Hansen is wearing her dress uniform today in court. Notes she wasn't wearing one last May. Hansen says she was off duty. #DerekChauvinTrial
Nelson is now asking about Hansen's firefighter training...not her EMT training.

Nelson: "Do you have trainings that focus on how to deal with the physical reaction to stress?" #DerekChauvinTrial
Nelson: "Do you, have you ever heard the term tunnel vision as a part of fire training...So when you're stressed you kind of focus on a particular thing."

Hansen: "Right."
Nelson is distinguishing the type of training and difference between EMT and a paramedic.
Nelson now asks if someone has ever recorded Hansen while she's fighting a fire. She says no.

Now asks if someone has yelled at her or telling her she was doing it wrong while fighting a fire.

Hansen: I'm very confident in the training that I've been given.
Hansen says a burning building is more concerning than ppl talking to her.

Nelson continues to press her w/ different scenarios.

Hansen: I'll repeat myself because I'm confident in my job and what I do and what needs to be done and I training, so I would continue to do that.
Deleted a tweet because I attributed the wrong person.
Nelson is pressing Hansen about ambulance response times. He lists the time of the call, her arrival time, etc.

Nelson: The medics were called at 8:21 code three.

Hansen: I don't believe that. #DerekChauvinTrial
Hansen believes the response time was abnormal.
Nelson: I mean you, you kind of form that opinion on that day, but there were some miscommunications between medics and fire and police.

Hansen: Right. Which, I mean not to the fault of medics or fire. It's, we get a call and we go. #DerekChauvinTrial
Nelson shifting questioning to focus on opioids and overdoses and Hansen's experience in handling that type of medical call. #DerekChauvinTrial
Nelson asks about Hansen's demeanor while speaking to the officers...says it "got louder and more frustrated."

Hansen says frustrated isn't the word she would use..."more desperate."

Nelson: You called the officers a b---- right?

#DerekChauvinTrial
Judge Cahill just jumped in to tell Hansen to just answer the questions. Hansen has cut Nelson off and has been sharped in her responses. #DerekChauvinTrial
*sharper
Hansen says she chose not to review the transcript of her interview. #ChauvinTrial
Frank objects, improper form of cross examination.

Cahill sustains.

Nelson is now approaching Hansen with the transcript of her interview.
Jurors are now being removed. Judge Cahill asks for counsel and Hansen to remain. #DerekChauvinTrial
Cahill: Miss Hansen I'm advising you, do not argue with counsel...your job is to answer.

Hansen starts to interrupt and Cahill responds firmly.

Cahill: Do not argue with counsel, answer the questions do not volunteer information that is not requested by the attorneys...
Hansen is released and will return tomorrow.

Judge Cahill just asked for someone to come back in...referenced a cell phone.
#DerekChauvinTrial
They're going back to the chambers to discuss something. I think they're looking for someone who will then be escorted in...

Not sure what's going on... #DerekChauvinTrial
There's a woman now in the courtroom who was apparently taking pictures on the 18th floor. A deputy took her phone away as a result. She says she didn't know that it was prohibited to take pictures.
She is a media handler for Darnella Frazier and told Judge Cahill she took a picture of Darnella who was speaking with MN AG Keith Ellison. He's asking her to delete the picture now.

#DerekChauvinTrial
Now adjourned until tomorrow morning. #ChauvinTrial
