BREAKING: A Metropolitan Police officer has been convicted of membership of the banned neo-Nazi terrorist organisation National Action.

Benjamin Hannam, 22, from north London, is the first British officer to be convicted of a terrorism offence
He remained in NA after it was outlawed.

Hannam then joined the police after lying about his past in an application form.

He was also convicted of two counts of fraud and two counts of possessing information useful to a terrorist
Reporting restrictions had prevented any publicity about the case due to a planned second trial involving sexual offences.

Bur he pleaded guilty last week to possessing prohibited images of children.

He only entered the guilty plea after the trial one jury had retired
Jurors convicted him of remaining in NA for several months after it was banned in December 2016, as well as two counts of fraud for lying about his past in a Met application form.

The fraud involved over £66,000 he earned from the police after joining in 2018
This was Hannam taking part in a neo-Nazi propaganda video in July 2017.

Later that month he applied to join the Met Police
Hannam was caught after anti-fascists leaked data online from the neo-Nazi web forum Iron March.

That was in late 2019.

His IP address was among the British users

Elaborate security operation to get Hannam out of court via a back door without any reporters present.

Didn’t work
In better quality
In September 2017, before he joined the Met, counter terror police seized raw footage of Hannam at group events after the ban.

The footage was found during searches of the homes of NA co-founder Alex Davies and a member called Mark Jones.

Hannam was not identified
This was Hannam fighting with Oskar Dunn-Koczorowski, later convicted to terror offences, watched by Alex Davies
During his trial, Hannam told jurors "there are no pictures of me doing a Nazi salute".

But we have identified him at fight training event in August 2016 that was filmed for an NA propaganda video.

What do the group do at the end? He's circled in red 👇
Move over Anthony Joshua.

Alex Davies and Hannam sparring in the woods
Other people who associated with Hannam:

*Mark Jones, jailed last year for being an NA member

*Elliott Richards-Good, jailed in 2019 for racial hatred offences

Some people remain unidentified.

One, described as a Satanist, is from London and called David. He was in NA
Worth adding that one of his two convictions today for possessing information useful to a terrorist was for a saved copy of the Anders Breivik 'manifesto'.

It's the first successful prosecution under that section of the Terrorism Act for possession of that particular document
*16 people now convicted of NA membership

*Former NA member Zack Davies convicted before the ban of attempted murder for trying to behead a Sikh dentist in Wales

*Former NA spokesman Jack Renshaw convicted of planning a terror attack to kill his MP
*Pre-ban member Jack Coulson convicted of making a pipe bomb and having bomb-making instructions

*Three one-time members convicted of paedophile offences since the ban

*NA now banned under three aliases

*A splinter group -Sonnenkrieg Division - is banned here and in Australia

The terrorist threat level for the UK is moved from substantial (meaning an attack is likely) to severe (an attack is highly likely).

The decision is made by Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre.

It had been downgraded to substantial a year ago tomorrow
In the year since it was downgraded there have been four attacks declared as terrorist incidents - Fishmongers Hall, HMP Whitemoor, Streatham, and Reading.

There have also been three alleged terrorist plots
The Home Secretary said the move is a "precautionary measure and is not based on any specific threat."

It follows attacks in France and Austria

The Arena Inquiry hears about criticisms that an expert has made of the fire and rescue service response on the night of the bomb
Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service chose a "distant and detached" rendezvous point three miles from the Arena.

It was different from that used by other services during the initial response.

Fire engines did not arrive at the Arena until two hours after the attack
The expert identified that GMFRS was wrong to base its initial response on instructions from its "bomb card" not its "explosion card".

The suggestion is that the latter could have resulted in a different response and resources being deployed to the scene more quickly

A thread on some of the context around the @BBCPanorama we broadcast this week.

The networks we investigated are often in focus due to their potential to generate terrorist attacks.

But the violence and hatred encouraged is far broader
bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episod…
Fascist Forge, the neo-Nazi website whose founder we exposed, hosted terrorist instructions and was used to promote racial hatred, but also sexual violence against women

One thread provided a pseudo-intellectual justification for rape. Another advocated “sexual terrorism”
In an encrypted chat group for forum members - managed by the founder - some users argued in favour of sexually abusing young teenage girls

The private chat group contained members of various neo-Nazi groups, including The Base, Atomwaffen Division and the Sonnenkrieg Division

Sudesh Amman, the 20-year-old responsible for the attack in Streatham today, was jailed in December 2018 for 13 terror offences.

I was there and recall Amman smiling as he was sentenced.

He was released from prison around a week ago
He had pleaded guilty in November 2018 to six charges of possessing documents containing terrorist information and seven of disseminating terrorist publications.

One of the terrorist manuals he admitted owning was ‘Bloody Brazilian Knife Fightin’ Techniques’
Amman was first arrested in north London in May 2018 by armed officers on suspicion of planning a terrorist attack.

He had come to the attention of counter terrorism police in April that year when officers were made aware of postings on the Telegram messaging app
