Covid numbers are rising again but many things that have or should change since last year, especially for Doctors & HCW Covid behaviour
1. There is less fear. It is more about being moderately & meaningfully cautious now.
N/2
2. There is no need to sanitise surfaces - including door knobs, handles, chair & table, groceries & vegetables.
3. Wearing disposable gloves & shoe covers serves no useful purpose. Regular washing of hand or using sanitiser is enough. Avoid touching the face.
N/3
4. No need of N 95 mask in non Covid indoor or outdoor patient areas. Regular 3 ply surgical mask/ double mask is good enough. It is more comfortable and ensures better compliance through the day.
N/4
5. There is absolutely no need to wear any sort of PPE kits & Shoe covers while doing OPD. Wearing them affords no special benefits. Caps and Face shield are also not needed if a mask is in place for Doctor & the Patient !
N/5
6. There is no need of PPE kits while doing Surgery in patients with RT - PCR - ve Report. Disposable gowns & drapes are not giving extra security
7. Fear of viral transmission through surgical smoke or CO 2 emission during Laparoscopy were highly exaggerated & unfounded.
N/6
Newer devices or jugaad techniques to process gaseous emissions through hypochlorite or other virucidal solution/ filters are perhaps not required at all.
Lots of companies sold additional devices due to this fear
N/7
8. False negative RT PCR report seems to be much less common than earlier believed. In practice, we have not come across many such cases. Definitely, not to the tune of ~ 30 % !
N/8
9. * Ease of testing, * Availability of Vaccine & probably * Less Lethality of Covid 19 infection (a lower CFR is being observed in this wave) should help us counter this wave better.
N/9
10. Doctors do not need to necessarily wear scrubs while in Hospital nor do they need to put all clothes in the washing machine immediately on returning home
Taking bath on return to home is good for hygiene, relaxation & personal choice. Don't do it out of Covid Fear !

11. Absolute numbers & Statistics don't tell the whole story. We have to remain vigilant about the clinical situation around us.
Less Fearful but Meaningfully Cautious should be the new mantra.
India cannot and should not replicate the European or First World approach of complete lockdown. The consequences of lockdown will be far worse than that of Coronavirus.
Looking at the diversity of population in India & the exposure from domestic workers, daily wagers, newspapers, daily grocery, milk packets - there is never going to be a way we can be in complete isolation or a lockdown like Europe.
If Mumbai Local/ Delhi Metro & markets are brought to complete shutdown - I assure you significant population will suffer even more.
The consequences to people on the razer thin economic edge will be far graver. Many have to work daily to eat a meal daily.
