/ Our coronavirus response is beset by populism and fundamentalism. There is a fervent belief in our means to control the virus and attempts to assess the validity of these beliefs are shunned.
/ Test-and-trace was the religion last year. It was supposed to 'stop the virus in its tracks', and thus we didn't protect the vulnerable adequately. Children, youth, vulnerable, and the economy paid a heavy price for this illusion and the switch to a lockdown-based 'strategy'.
/ Now many hold similar unfounded and unexamined beliefs about lockdowns and border testing/quarantines, that these will 'stop the virus in its tracks'. Somehow, it still continues to be nearly impossible to admit just how limited we are in our ability to control the virus.
/ Given this destructive lack of humility in our Covid response, these 5 minutes in this interview of Prof Chris Witty (Chief Medical Office of England) are very refreshing.
We have much less control than we think.
