this is a lie

#3 Nic Petit is actually around 1.4 miles from Ambler Checkpoint, traveling 7.7mph. It looks like he's about as far from Ambler as Ambler's own airport and runway. Cruisin' 😎🆒

Almost three hours of daylight left. It looks like no one has departed Ambler yet, and we have three more racers on their way to the checkpoint. #1 DJ Starr (18 miles out), #9 Reese Madden (47.7 miles out), #12 Phillip Hanke (57 miles out).
aww. cuuute
#1 DJ Starr of Huslia, #9 Reese Madden of Nome, and Philip Hanke of Fairbanks still have a ways to go before Ambler, where they (and their dogs) will get some much-needed rest.

I bet TB2 has shrimp on the barbie
Yes, we tailored the shelter cabin cookout imagery to those fans more likely to be awake at this hour. You’re welcome.
#3 Nic Petit left Ambler at 7:23pm with 11 dogs.
Since #3 Nic Petit has left Ambler, we can expect other mushers to jump up and follow him for the next few hours. Nic is expected into Shungnak in about two to three hours at the pace he's going.
go go go go go go go who's next ! go go go go go go who's next!
#7 Ryan Redington, winner of the 2019 Kobuk 440, has left Ambler. #4 Tony Browning, has also gotten a move on. #11 Dempsey Woods, #8 Kevin Hansen, #10 Sam Brewer, #6 Hugh Neff, #2 Jeff King and #5 Gunnar Johnson are at the Ambler checkpoint.
Ambler (First Pass) Departures:

#2 Nic Petit left at 7:23pm with 11 dogs.
#7 Ryan Redington left at 8:15pm with 11 dogs.
#4 Tony Browning left at 8:30pm with 10 dogs.
#2 Jeff King left at 9:00pm with 11 dogs.
#5 Gunnar Johnson left at 9:06pm with 11 dogs.
#1 DJ Starr is 5.3 miles from the Ambler checkpoint, moving at ~6.1mph. Seems like he'll reach Ambler within about an hour!
#9 Reese Madden and Philip Hanke are 39 miles and 49.1 miles from the Ambler checkpoint, respectively. The sunset was at 9:38pm in Ambler. Plenty of light around here in Kotzebue, where the sunset was at 9:57pm. So the mushers have a little while before it's truly dark.
Checkpoint Coordinator Morgan Johnson reported that it is got pretty stormy in Ambler today, blowing 30 mph. "You can barely see, looking Selawik way," he said.
Ambler, located on the north bank of the Kobuk River near the confluence of the Ambler and the Kobuk rivers, lies 45 miles north of the Arctic Circle and 138 miles northeast of Kotzebue.
In 1958, people from Shungnak and Kobuk moved upstream because of the abundance of subsistence resources in the area and permanently settled Ambler. Subsistence is a major part of the local economy.
#1 DJ Starr arrived in Ambler at 11:23pm with 12 dogs. He left the Kiana checkpoint this morning at 6:10am. Long day! #10 Sam Brewer departed Ambler at 11:24pm with 10 dogs. #6 Hugh Neff, #8 Kevin Hansen, and #11 Dempsey Woods are all taking rest time in Ambler.
#3 Nick Petit has passed through the Shungnak checkpoint, after 22 minutes of rest time. Fun fact! Kobuk 440 race rules say that dropping dogs in Shungnak and Kobuk is not allowed. Also, mushers must finish with no less than five dogs.

A note on strategy

Our region—above the Arctic Circle—has gained so much daylight already that mushers only need headlamps a few hours each night. But that also means it’s all that much more important to use that night time to mush and try to rest during the heat of the day...1/ Image
While humans may be wide awake in the early/mid-afternoon, sled dogs often have the least daily energy at that time and have the most energy during the dark nocturnal hours—which also happen to be the time the trail itself might be the hardest/fastest (depending on weather)... 2/
So it’s ideal if teams can rest in the warm sun during “the heat of the day.” 3/
