A few quick take-aways from tonight’s #ManateeCounty Piney Point press conference:
/12
.Manatee County is working day and night with the Sheriff and state officials at DEP, DEM, FEMA and pretty much any other acronym you can think of to resolve this issue. 2/12
.The affected stack is predominantly sea water and sludge from the previous Port dredging. Not the best case…but definitely not the worst case. 3/12
As Administrator Hopes said, “I wouldn’t swim in it” but it’s not purely toxic water. This stack has an active ecosystem with fish and fowl. 4/12
.The other stacks are presently not considered “at risk” and are structurally sound. 5/12
.We’re releasing 22,000 gallon/min to relieve pressure in the affected stack. At this rate, it’ll take 10-12 days to empty if necessary. That’s our outside “at-risk range” if the integrity of the stack walls hold. 6/12
.One wall has breached and is the focus of current efforts. Public Works is preparing to minimize this issue to direct the water to safer areas and avoid the breach getting worse. 7/12
.We have basins and areas we can flow the water with minimal concern as long as we can keep the flow where it needs to go. 8/12
.We have proactively begun evacuations of residences and businesses nearby as a precaution for a potential larger breach or a full collapse of the stack. 9/12
.Red Cross is assisting where needed. Fortunately, this is a lightly-populated area (approx. 20 homes). 10/12
.Gulfstream Gas facility is a higher concern and is being sandbagged overnight. 11/12
.Finally, this is a constantly evolving situation and can change at any time. Keep an eye out for further alerts, especially if you live near the site. I’ll put eyes on the site tomorrow and provide more updates. 12/12
