Absolutely disgraceful. Police shut down Good Friday service in Polish Church, Balham yesterday.
“I appreciate that it is Good Friday, and you’d like to worship, but this gathering is unlawful”
Find me a scene that better expresses the worst aspects of modern Britain that a policeman traipsing onto the Sanctuary on the most solemn day of the Christian year threatening people with fines for going to church a day after zero COVID deaths were reported in London.
This has gone too far.
Lots of people rushing to judge the parish. Here’s the site they were using to regulate numbers and keep within the rules:
I’m not anti-lockdown. My view is that policing the COVID regs (which themselves are directly in tension with ECHR fundamental rights) requires sensitivity and proportionality. Don’t tell me that this video shows that. It’s an act of extreme disrespect and ignorance.
Reflecting further, the image of a policeman displacing a priest and proceeding to deliver a homily about the new Common Good - while unknowingly desecrating the Sanctuary - really is a symbol for our times.

Some actually useful COVID-19 advice from James Robb, MD FCAP one of the first molecular virologists in the world to work on coronaviruses. This is being circulated by NHS doctors. I found the 2nd section on what to stock useful (so I’m sharing).
1) NO HANDSHAKING! Use a fist bump, slight bow, elbow bump, etc. 2) Use ONLY your knuckle to touch light switches. elevator buttons, etc.. Lift the gasoline dispenser with a paper towel or use a disposable glove.
3) Open doors with your closed fist or hip - do not grasp the handle with your hand, unless there is no other way to open the door. Especially important on bathroom and post office/commercial doors.
“Ms. Lam’s government, wearing Beijing’s handcuffs, has put the police service in a position where with clearly irresponsible leadership it has fallen so far below its former standards.”
