So, I tried logging back in to Ravelry using EMW's skin.
I still had eye strain within about 10 minutes. Nausea in about 30. I put up with it for about an hour. That's probably going to be my limit, if that. #RavelryAccessibility
Why are users expected to hurt themselves, or find workarounds (that don't work 100%, unfortunately) just to use a website? It's on the site's creators to make it accessible. I can't stress that enough. And they've failed. #RavelryAccessibility
Anyone who tries to point it out on the main forums of the site is shut down. If you send them feedback, it goes ignored. Help gets offered and is disregarded. And everyone with health issues? Oh, please. We're all hysterical. #RavelryAccessibility
So why would anyone want to stay there? Because many of us have made friends there. We help each other through crises. We ooh and aah over pet and baby pics. We educate each other, and not just about fiber arts. #RavelryAccessibility
I've been on Rav since Aug. 2007--back from the days when you had to wait for an invite to get in. I donated to help them get the new server. I was part of the big pattern tagging project. And yeah, I've seen a lot of things happen on there. #RavelryAccessibility
Yes, we've been given a great site. It wouldn't be much of anything without Every. Single. User. Each person who contributes their data-adds a pattern, a yarn, a project, helps someone with a pattern question on one of the forum-they're the reason it works. #RavelryAccessibility
Now, there's a core section of users who cannot use the site, or cannot use it for long. People have had their health and livelihoods impacted. And we're all supposed to be OK with this? I think not. #RavelryAccessibility
They made changes that hurt people, doubled-down on them, and really don't give a shit if people leave. It's all in our heads, you see.
If this were a regular place of employment, there would be some kind of recourse. They took our volunteer work and, yeah #RavelryAccessibility
It's not like Internet standards for accessibility don't exist. They do, and they know about them, and they're claiming to follow them. But when users report health issues, those need to be taken seriously, and Ravelry doesn't. #RavelryAccessibility
So what my rambling is for, I guess, is that I'm sad, and frustrated, and angry. I tried to log in today to attempt to use a site again that I've used for almost 14 years, and I can't. All because of changes to the code that could have been avoided. #RavelryAccessibility
And if you're still reading all this, thank you.
