Brace yourself ⚠️🥶

Arctic air is engulfing almost all of Europe in the next few hours. You should notice a massive temperature drop.

Snow is falling quite widely across parts of northern Europe as we speak.
This animation shows the wind chill temperature, a calculation accounting for strength of wind and air temperature.

Short story: it is going to feel extremely cold for April.
We can't be too surprised by cold and snow and April. This is not rare - it is actually common.

However, this level of cold is impressive. I would say this is a particularly strong Arctic outbreak. Overnight lows will fall below zero widely across Europe.
The thing that is most remarkable in my opinion, is the enormous drop from record-breaking heat at the end of March.

Insects, vegetation etc will be in for a massive shock after summer-style heat.

Amazing season flip!

Large parts of Europe saw their hottest March day on record only a few days ago. Places like Germany 🇩🇪 recorded +27.2°C on 31 March 🥵

Now it is snowing with a bitter wind-chill 🥶

For reference, it wasn't just Germany that was setting heat records at the end of March.

Summer-style heat followed by winter cold like this is extremely tough on nature.

Arctic blast imminent for Europe ⚠️

This will come as a massive shock after record-breaking heat a few days ago.

One of the most impressive cold air outbreaks I have seen for a while.
April weather in Europe: 'I will do what I want'

Check this out, daytime temperature will be more than 20°C colder compared to the March heatwave from a few days ago.
Snow is expected. Could look quite impressive locally while it is falling.

Arctic blast incoming ⚠️ A huge temperature shock is on the way for Europe.

From record heat at the end of March, temperatures are going to tumble well below normal early next week. Yes, there will also be snow for some ❄️
The contrast from this week to next is almost a joke. One of the reasons I didn't make this post yesterday - nobody would believe it! 😅
A nice wave in the jet stream and the Arctic floodgates are open.

Very efficient transport of cold, perfect setup.

The winter was exceptionally warm for parts of Canada, Greenland and some of the high Arctic. Also very warm Tibet through to Middle East.

The cold beast plagued Russia to give a cold winter here.

This is a summary from December 2020 through February 2021.

THREAD
Meteorologists like to split the year up into 3-month seasonal chunks for statistical purposes. Winter in the Northern Hemisphere is considered Dec, Jan & Feb.

This was December on its own.
This was January on its own. Cold building in Russia, remarkable warmth in Canada and Arctic. North Africa and Tibet notably warm/hot.

Cool Antarctica and Australia.

February 2021... a month of extremes.

🔴 Very warm month especially from China through Central Asia into the Middle East and also parts of Arctic

🔵 Very cold month for much of North America (Alaska to Gulf of Mexico). Also very cold in Russia and NE Europe.
A global perspective.

We often observe extreme patterns when there is polar vortex disruption.
