The University of Chester claims they need to make up to 86 staff redundant due to ‘financial pressures’. Would you like to hear about how they wasted tens of thousands of £££ because they didn’t bother to get planning permission for one of their campuses? 1/5
2014: the University refurbished Thornton campus for its science and engineering faculty, teaching around 600 students. They never applied for planning permission. 2018: retrospective planning permission denied. MP @justinmadders called for an inquiry 2/5 chesterstandard.co.uk/news/16284867.…
2020: The public inquiry concluded that teaching could no longer continue as students were at risk of death due to the oil refinery next door. Staff and students have been displaced at considerable cost 3/5 bbc.co.uk/news/uk-englan…
2020: The University appealed, but the Health and Safety exec said their evidence was ‘misconceived and seriously misleading’ and ordered them to pay full legal costs. 4/5 cheshire-live.co.uk/news/chester-c…
Not only have the University shown a cavalier approach to safety, they have also put themselves under a lot of ‘financial pressure’. Given they will not share business planning docs with UCU, how can we trust staff cuts are not paying for the University’s expensive mistake? 5/5
