I empathize with @ray8fisher. He had a great thing, and it was taken away from him for reasons beyond his control. He went from a king to a pawn in the creative process. Here's a thread why that sucks...
He saw leaders making poor business decisions for the wrong reasons. For greed. For short term returns. And when he stood up for what he believed in, what turned out to be the absolute better creative choice, he was retaliated against.
Some of those corporate execs thought authority comes with knowledge or expertise. It doesn't. Textbook case of the higher ups thinking they're right just because they're higher up.
And for him to take it this far takes a lot of courage. I know I would not have had the fortitude to do it. He's a superhero just for standing up against a huge corporate monolith all on his own.
As for the racial allegations, people will land on both sides. As a spectator, it doesn't appear to me the creative changes were motivated by racism, but there's no denying that the original plotline was superior black representation. And that matters.
Diminishing black perspectives isn't so much a crime against Ray personally as it is one against the entire audience. We deserve Cyborg's full story, and the WB execs didn't recognize that because there were not enough diverse voices being heard.
That's one thing that needs to change. Ray and more people like him need to become the studio heads.
Selfishly throughout this whole saga, I was bitter about not knowing the full story off the bat. The slow drip of info made it look like Ray had something to hide. Some people will surely say he did.
Some will look at today's piece, call him a diva and say, "oh, he should have just shut up and said his lines and did what the bosses said and none of this would have happened."
If that's why he was cautious, I would want to tell him that there are plenty of people who would not have seen it that way, plenty of people who empathize with being crapped on by corporate politics and who would cheer on a champion aiming to expose and topple the system.
I didn't get on this train initially because the lack of transparency breeds skepticism. Knowing all the facts, I would have definitely said all this much sooner. Whatever feeling I had to doubt Ray, I'm happy to say I was wrong.
