The Arkansas legislature voted Tuesday to override Gov. Asa Hutchinson's veto of a bill banning doctors from giving trans youth gender-affirming treatment. The bill is now law, though it is set to take effect this summer. T
rans activists, parents of trans kids, and the medical community had rallied against the legislation. Opponents are planning to challenge it in court.
In March 2021, Hutchinson signed into law a bill that bans trans women and girls from participating in school sports consistent with their gender identity.
However, he had vetoed the anti-trans health care bill Monday, calling it 'government overreach.' More than 90 anti-trans bills have been introduced in state legislatures during the 2021 legislative session...
...making it a record year for anti-trans legislation, according to the HRC. Many of the bills specifically target trans youth in sports or health care. LGBTQ+ people can still be fired, evicted, or denied services in most states because of who they are or whom they love
The Equality Act would ban discrimination against people based on sexual orientation and gender identity. It most recently passed the House on February 24, 2021, and is headed to the Senate for a vote.

On April 3, the Mauna Loa Observatory in Hawaii measured average atmospheric carbon dioxide to be 421.21 parts per million. Image
This is the first time in human history that CO2 concentration has exceeded 420 ppm, which means that humans have reached the halfway point of doubling pre-industrial CO2 levels.
Doubling pre-industrial CO2 levels has a 95% chance of warming the planet by at least 2 degrees Celsius, according to a study published last year by the journal Reviews of Geophysics.

The ‘MONTERO’ music video has received praise from industry critics but criticism from right-wing & evangelical groups for both its queer iconography and supposed glorification of Satanism.

New analysis has found that one-third of COVID-19 survivors have been diagnosed with a brain or mental health disorder within 6 months of contracting the virus. Image
The study observed more than 230,000 COVID-19 patients, a majority of them American, and saw that 34% of them faced such longer-term disorders in that period.
'It confirms beyond any reasonable doubt that COVID-19 affects both brain and mind in equal measure,' Simon Wessely, an independent expert in London, said of the new findings.

On Tuesday, the WHO's director-general referred to the gap in vaccinations between high- and low-income countries as a 'travesty,' and said such a gulf will only prolong the severity of the pandemic. Image
'Scaling up production and equitable distribution remains the major barrier to ending the acute stage of this pandemic,' Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said.
At the same news conference, Namibian President Hage Geingob, whose country has seen less than 1% of its population inoculated, called the current vaccine disparity 'vaccine apartheid.'

A new Utah state law will require biological fathers to pay half of a pregnant person's out-of-pocket pregnancy costs
Though other states, like Wisconsin or New York, have policies that can compel fathers to provide pregnant people with prenatal financial support, Utah's law is believed to be the widest-reaching of its kind in the U.S.
The proposal easily passed through the Utah legislature and was signed into law by GOP Gov. Cox.

One of the bill's GOP sponsors, Rep. Brammer, said the legislation can serve as an alternative type of pro-life legislation when compared to many traditional anti-abortion bills
