Excited to chat with our new deacons at GCC this afternoon about what their role looks like in our wee church.

Here's the framework we're working through:
1 Timothy 1:12-17 & 3:1-16

Ministry by God’s mercy.
Examples of God’s grace
to become examples to God’s church.
The Spiritual-Service of Deacons, from Acts 6-7

[1] Maintaining unity in the church - Acts 6:1 - aware of potential tensions.

[2] Ensuring care for the needy - Acts 6:1 - aware of daily needs.

[3] Looking out for the overlooked - Acts 6:1 - aware of those others might forget.
[4] Taking responsibility from the elders - Acts 6:2,4 - aware of what the elders must not neglect.

[5] Led by the Spirit and His wisdom - Acts 6:3 - aware of your desperate need of Him.
[6] Set-apart by the church - Acts 6:3,5-6 - aware of the calling you’ve received.

[7] Serving the ministry of the word - Acts 6:7-7:60 - aware of those who are not yet obedient to the faith.
What will that look like practically at GCC?

Not so much about meetings, but ministry.
Not so much about programmes, but people.
Not just doing but delegating.

Re-reading some of Urban Harvest tonight by Joslin Roy, especially on Youth Work. Mental how perceptive a book it was, how almost prophetic it's been since it was written, and how the church has failed to learn many of it's lessons. Here's some snippets worth considering:
‘For all the dedication of godly Sunday School teachers over many years, it appears that much of that effort was like pouring water into a badly holed bucket or, to be more biblical, like trying to catch fish with some badly torn gospel nets...
...Why was it that so many children who swam into the gospel nets in their earlier years had on the whole swum out again before adult years had been reached?’
