folks who are new to the space ask me which crypto will "win" once the dust settles. example argument i hear: if ethereum can act as a store of value *and* be the world computer, isn't it objectively better than bitcoin?

this sort of questioning tends to happen with every major technological advancement. when the 1908 ford model T came out, it would've been really hard to picture the sprawling automotive industry we have today

"that's not a fair comparison. money is money. it just needs to be a ledger. cars can be all sorts of things."
cars can also seem one-dimensional to someone in the 1700s: they just need to get me from point A to point B, faster and more comfortably than a horse + buggy

for a more recent comparison, check out social media networks. imagine during the internet's infancy, when all you could do was exchange emails, a time traveler revealed the companies that would be built on top of this protocol: fb, twitter, instagram, snapchat, tiktok...

... reddit, clubhouse, blind, quora, twitch, etc.
to someone in 1990, it wouldn't make sense that multiple, massive platforms could exist while providing conceptually nearly identical things. how would you tease out the differences in plain english?

on fb you can submit text / images / video and share it with your friends. twitter is like facebook but you're capped on chars. instagram only lets you share photos, similar to snapchat, but they stick around, and you can attach captions. all of these will be very popular
6/10
how could a 90s homie reconcile these players coexisting and carving out market share? furthermore, the small nuances between facebook vs. twitter lead to vastly different decisions on the underlying tech stack, and how it builds around "the protocol"
7/10
culture + persona factor in too. who's running the show? who are they surrounding themselves with? how do they engage with the public (twitter / ads / etc), and how transparent are they?

we're in a similar spot with crypto. this space will grow a lot over the next 50 years, introducing solutions to problems we won't be aware of until we've played with it for a while.
futuristic problems require futuristic solutions
9/10
in conclusion, we really can't say that X coin will be the winner of X space, because the pie will be massive, there will be many ways to tackle a problem, and human beings have a diversity of preferences
