Whenever I see people talking about the “skyrocketing” rates of people saying that they’re trans, I think of this chart. They used to punish children for being left-handed and force them to write with their right hand. Guess what happened after that stopped?
One constant that’s present literally everywhere in human history is that people in dominant groups will invent reasons to persecute people different than them, no matter how silly the reasons and no matter how cruel the effect. This is all familiar.
Reading all this, Jesse Singal could have made a fortune in the mid twentieth century arguing that left-handed was inherently risky and that children should simply not be allowed to be left-handed without proof that there was no other option.
Ok honestly this is UNCANNY

This is the climate denial playbook at work against trans people. Pamela Paul does not offer an alternative that is backed by science, so she just tries to poke holes in the option that is. And it works. And that's very bad for people growing up with dysphoria.
You get the feeling that whoever edits this column gave up halfway through this paragraph as it devolves into ranting based on vibes. This is actually a perfect illustration of the ratchet used to persuade people to adopt extremist anti-trans positions. Image

What we're living through politically is the result of decades of plundering the wealth of this and other nations while keeping voters in line with cheap shit and fear of the other guy rather than any real feeling of investment in society or hope of a future with room for them.
Our society has a deeply unhealthy attitude towards young people - we follow their every cultural preference, display open envy of their youthful appearances, build political movements on their innocence while publicly mocking the lack of experience it brings.
Young people today live with a degree of constant surveillance and control over their schedules that I literally cannot imagine. Their school days included mass shooter drills. Their college years happened on zoom. They have grown up with visions of climate apocalypse all around.

BREAKING: At least seventeen bomb threats have been reported against Planet Fitness locations after Libs of TikTok began a campaign against the brand for canceling the membership of a woman who took a photo of another customer using the locker room. Image

Right-wing media took their cue from LoTT, peppering in further anti-trans rhetoric and sometimes invoking the backlash that followed Bud Light's partnership with trans influencer Dylan Mulvaney as they repeated the story across cable news, online outlets, and podcasts.
