hihi earlier i talked about the violence in Belfast right now and now I wanna give some background about the troubles. I tried to make it easy to understand so please take a quick read ty <3
TW // violence , bombings , death , mentions of religion , police brutality
it started in the late 1960s and is ended in 1998 after the good Friday agreement.

the violence stayed mostly in Northern Ireland but would occasionally happen in the Republic of Ireland or even mainland Europe.
the conflict was mainly political and fuelled by historical events. I will refer to both sides as protestant and Catholic even though it wasn't religious.
the main issue was Northern Ireland being separated from the Republic.

it began during a campaign to end discrimination against catholics in the North that was met with police brutality and violence from loyalists.
in August 1969 british troops were deployed in NI. "Peace walls" were built at some parts of the border.

it escalated even more in 1972 when British soldiers shot 26 innocent civilians during a football game.
most of the rest of the violence was back and forth bombings and other forms of violence. the ira is the most notable for this.

while mentioning the ira, I just wanna add that u shouldn't make ira jokes if youre not irish.
more than 3500 people died with more than half of them being innocent civilians.

there has been occasional random attacks since but nothing as extreme as whats happening now.

thread of whats happening in Northern Ireland right now because I haven't seen many people talking about it.

read and rt
over the last week loyalists have been getting gradually more and more violent because of the border between them and the rest of the UK over brexit.

theyre rioting and protesting. there's been petrol bombs, bus hijacking and more.
its extremely reminiscent of the troubles and its fucking terrifying. nothing is being said in big news outlets and its only getting worse.

there's literally children as young as 13 involved. its absolutely horrific.
