A Torstar analysis has found a dramatic increase in active mining claims in Grassy Narrows, an Indigenous territory located about 100 kilometres north of Kenora in the northwest corner of Ontario.

As gold prices continue to soar, prospectors have staked nearly 4,000 active mining claims across Grassy Narrows traditional territory covering roughly 122,000 hectares — about double the size of the City of Toronto.

“Ontario still refuses to respect the will of my people. (I'm) concerned that further industrial activity could compound the harm that has already been done by mercury and clear-cutting,” Grassy Narrows First Nation Chief Randy Fobister said in an email. thestar.com/news/investiga…
Toronto Star investigations have previously identified two suspected mercury dump sites upstream from the Indigenous community, where residents have long suffered mental and physical health problems due to mercury poisoning.

Area covered by mining claims in Grassy Narrows land declaration area has grown fourfold from October 2018 to March 2021.

12 taxi drivers in the GTA have died since the pandemic started. Countless others infected, some still suffering from COVID

They bring the sick to hospitals, to vaccine clinics and testing sites. Why are they not a priority?

"While others were told to stay home, taxi drivers couldn’t. They still don’t. After seeing their coworkers die from the virus, many taxi drivers chose not to go to work, however this decision was not an easy one."
thestar.com/opinion/contri…
"Although the taxi industry is directly impacted by provincial lockdowns, the strict eligibility criteria of the small business grants make it difficult for any taxi drivers to qualify for them, further increasing their financial hardships."
