1. Seven members of the North Carolina Senate have introduced draconian anti-trans legislation targeting children, adults, and medical professionals.

These legislators are backed by corporations that purport to be champions of LGBTQ rights and equality

2. The bill, S514, bans anyone under the age of 21 from receiving gender-affirming treatment, including reversible hormone therapy.

This means it targets minors and adults.

And it would require doctors to terminate therapy in the middle of treatment.

3. S514 would also create a surveillance state in North Carolina schools, requiring teachers to report any students who demonstrate "gender nonconformity" to their parents

Teachers that fail to do so will be subject to professional "discipline."

4. @DukeEnergy holds themselves out as ardent supporters of LGBTQ rights.

"Duke Energy talks the talk and walks the walk"

Over the last 3 years, Duke Energy donated $75,200 to the sponsors of this anti-trans bill, making it the top corporate donor

5. In response to a request for comment, @DukeEnergy told popular.info that it is "firmly committed to supporting diversity" but "do not always agree" with the legislators it supports. Duke Energy says its "primary focus" is North Carolina's "clean energy transition"
6. Blue Cross Blue Shield North Carolina (@BlueCrossNC) claims it has a "fearless culture" that supports "LGBTQ+, diversity, and inclusion."

In the last 3 years, @BlueCrossNC donated $35,900 to the sponsors of North Carolina's anti-trans bill.

7. S514 not only runs counter to @BlueCrossNC's stated values, but also its stated views on hormone therapy as essential medical care, in certain circumstances for adults and minors.

9. @AmericanAir, which has donated 3K to the sponsors of S514, said that it has "a longstanding and unwavering commitment to standing up for LGBTQ rights" and is "reviewing the newly introduced legislation."

1. Hundreds of corporations have signed onto a new letter supporting "the right to vote" and opposing "discriminatory legislation" and I'm not impressed.

Here's why. Image
2. The statement does not address specific voter suppression bills that are under consideration in Texas, Arizona and elsewhere.

And the organizers of the letter made clear that there is no expectation that the signatories oppose any specific bills. Image
3. This is exactly what we saw in Georgia where a number of companies endorsed a broad statement in support of voting rights issued by the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce but stayed silent on individual bills.

These kind of statements have no impact.

This will be a short thread.

@JDVance1 2. J.D. Vance is going to run for the U.S. Senate.

In preparation for that his friend and business partner, billionaire corporate executive Peter Theil, has donated $10 MILLION, to a Super PAC that supports his candidacy
3. Theil is the chairman of Palantir, on the board of Facebook, and runs a hedge fund.

Backed by this mountain of corporate cash, Vance has the audacity to present himself as someone who is prepared to take on the elite and corporate power

1. Corporations received a lot of positive press for holding a Zoom call discussing the possibility of action in support of voting rights but there is no time to waste.

Texas could approve new voter suppression bills any day.

popular.info/p/democracy-is…
2. Corporate America failed to act with focus and urgency in Georgia and many companies issued statements opposing new restrictions AFTER the bill was signed into law.

Will they repeat the same mistake in Texas?

popular.info/p/democracy-is…
3. One thing that is getting lost is that very few companies have spoken out specifically against the Texas bills, HB6 and SB7.

And none have said they will cut off funding to the sponsors of these bills.

1. Republicans in Florida are advancing a proposal they claim will ensure "intellectual freedom and viewpoint diversity" at colleges but will actually create a dystopian surveillance state at the state's public universities

Follow along if interested

2. First, the Florida bill would "require public universities to survey students, faculty and staff about their beliefs and viewpoints"

But it "offers no assurances that the survey’s answers will be anonymous" and doesn't' say how the data will be used

popular.info/p/how-not-to-p…
3. Second, the Florida bill allows students to record any class without the professor's permission and use the recording " in connection with a complaint to the public institution of higher education" or "as evidence in a criminal or civil proceeding"
