On Monday the anti-mask, anti-vaccine, and anti-common health protocols moved to the legislature to continue their protest. Based on the video I saw, which included Max Bernier (of course), there were between 200 and 400 people. 1/17
Also present was Kevin Johnston who streamed the event on Instagram. Most of the speeches were boilerplate conspiracy woo so I won't bother repeating them. What was interesting was what happened as the event concluded. 2/17

We can look at this as another example of KJJ becoming increasingly unhinged having threatened AHS workers previously. I can be convinced that this is the case, but I hypothesize that there is something more deliberate. 3/17
Let's take a look at this rant within the context that it occurred.

He spends some time glad-handing supporters. His demeanor is cheerful, if also insincere and shallow. 4/17
As people ask to take pictures with him, we hear an older Native man who appears to have bought into the "vaccines are poison" narrative that is being disseminated by this movement. 5/17
The story is convoluted, though I don't doubt his genuine fear that has been stoked by bad actors. As I can make it out, he suggests a local Chief asked antifa and BLM to provide security so that vaccines can be distributed to elders. 6/17
It is after this story that KJJ goes off on his rant. 7/17
Unhinged? Sure, but also deliberate.

KJJ is playing to an audience that, despite his long history of lies, believes what he tells them and he knows this. It is performative. 8/17
First KJJ knows he won't win an election. Here however he is setting up the reason for his loss.

In short, he will likely claim to be the victim of election fraud because "they" are afraid of him and will do what they can to keep him out of power.

Sound familiar? 9/17
A second reason is perhaps darker.

Note how quickly his demeanor returns to the insincere charm he has been displaying before. 10/17
This is unsettling, but also rather instructive in that it suggests another truth about his performance.

I would argue that another aim is to gin up anger in his supporters while he himself can claim plausible deniability should anyone act on the rage he encourages. 11/17
I think KJJ wants the chaos that may result from his rhetoric, but he wants to watch it and benefit (if possible) from a safe distance.

Recall his attitude on Sunday when the fence came down. 12/17

It seems clear that KJJ knows how far to push things when HE is present. I suspect he would be fine with the fence coming down and would praise the act on video, but when he could be implicated? Then he's in favour of "law and order". 14/17
Finally, I can't help noting that his apparently newfound empathy for FNMI is at odds with this repulsive display. 15/17

I've started watching the Grace Life Church protest. A few hundred people based on the feeds I've been viewing and several dozen police.

Of course as expected Kevin Johnston and Derek Storie are there. 1/
We see them driving in and looking for a space to park. Here they pass Mark Friesen. 2/

During the 12 years I ran ARC, I always made an effort not to provide an uncritical platform for the people who I wrote about (usually using humour and mockery) as these people also craved attention and validation they believed that attention brought to them. 1/25
They hated being laughed at and shamed.

But there were always those who were shameless and sought any sort of attention. Those cases proved to be especially challenging. 2/25
One of those cases was, and continues to be, Kevin Johnston. An absolutely shameless self-promoter and liar, he seems to thrive on negative publicity. 3/25

In light of news that the @edmontonpolice don't have evidence to link the torch march to hatred (despite literally using imagery from a neo-Nazi torch march in Charlottesville) I thought I would do a bit of a deep dive into the Pawlowski brothers. 1/

FYI, this may be long and exceedingly boring for most people.

There will also be a great deal in this thread for which people will rightfully be very offended so please be warned. 2/
Artur Pawlowski again led a march, this time through Calgary (Feb 27), with torches claiming that there wasn't anything racist about it (again... they used the Charlottesville neo-Nazi torch march on their promotional material). 3/

Supporter (and sadly Canadian) Brandon Martinez is upset. 2/5
Martinez made some appearances on the blog while I was running it. 3/5

Evidently there was another anti-mask rally in Calgary. As Artur Pawlowski is currently in Vancouver for the anti-mask rally set to occur there tomorrow I'm not sure how well attended today's event in Calgary was. 1/17

That said, yesterday's event was interesting in that it might have been the most overt example of the marriage of anti-mask/anti-lockdown/anti-vax conspiracies with the discredited sovereign citizen movement. 2/17 Image
One of the keynote speakers was Christopher James Prichard, a "common law expert" from Burlington

@nolifeneet does a fantastic job of presenting who Prichard and directing his arguments here. 3/17

The organizers of the Edmonton torch rally claimed that the focus was on the lockdown and "persecution of Christian pastors" who refused to abide by bylaws 1/17

However they also had other targets. They attacked the "globalists", health professionals, science, the left in general and "antifa specifically", among others.

They also went after the media. 2/17
Journalist @BaileyNitti posted a clip of her collegues being harassed by Brad Carrigan, one of the organizers as well as Dawid Pawlowski whose bother Artur was the other organizer. 3/17
