#IPL2021 KKR lost the match in a space of 7 balls from 14.2 to 15.2, a thread with some pictures:
Up until the 2nd delivery of the 15th over, KKR were firmly in control. Their probability of winning at that point, based on gambling odds, was over 90%. At 14.2, Rana advances down and casually flicks the ball as they run a single. This advancing ploy will come back later.
After a single on the third delivery, Chahar bowls a gem at 14.4 that foxes every one - Shakib has no idea where the ball is, QDK can't believe it's missed the stumps, but it races away for 4 byes.
I mean seriously, how has this not hit the stumps?
One more, for good measure - Chahar unlucky it bounced so high.
Despite seeing the threat of Chahar, and thinking to see him out, Shakib utterly mistimes the ball at 14.5, but they run a single.
Now, at 14.6, KKR need a run a ball to win. They've already gotten 9 off the over and have 1 ball left to see Chahar off for good. He already has 3 wickets. What does Rana do? Comes down the track.
Chahar, having seen Rana advancing down track on multiple occasions already, is about to unleash what can only be his plan.
The ball is held back a touch, Rana is stranded on an island looks like a kid who has been found with a hand in the cookie jar "uh oh..."
Next over, Krunal Pandya comes on - Shakib defends the first delivery. At 15.2 he inexplicably attempts a disastrous slog, mistimes it again, and is caught.
Immediately after, the timeout is called. I have no idea what KKR discussed though. But, here they are talking about what must be absolutely nothing relevant to the game - because they batted like donuts after that. Complete lack of game awareness before, and after.
There appeared to be no recognition of remaining overs to be doled out. Bumrah had 2 left - you didn't need to slog, but you couldn't afford to defend either. There will be other points made - 4 off the final 10 deliveries from Krunal is inexcusable.
Small sample size, but through 5 innings, It's been hard to score in the back half of the innings at Chennai. The average through those 5 has been 86.6. You need to bat sensibly and can't afford to lose set batsmen, especially in a chase with the score so close in sight.
By gifting his wicket away, Rana committed a cardinal sin - and the match was done and dusted a few balls later due to Shakib's senseless slog. Oh, and one more thing...
Silly point! in T20!? Talk about mentally owning a team. This is the stuff of legends by Mumbai to put the final nail in the coffin, even though the match was already over.
