STATEMENT ON THE ARREST OF NWOKO SAN BY EFCC

Immediate past Attorney General of Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Uwemedimo Nwoko SAN has been arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). My position is that he should clear his name in court. Image
Officials of the Akwa Ibom State Government believe that they are above the law. The whole world recently read scandalous reports from the Accountant General of the State on how the current governor is wasting public funds with impunity.
As Attorney General, Nwoko SAN ensured that frivolous charges were filed against those who opposed the government of Akwa Ibom State. He basically turned the State Ministry of Justice into a partisan machinery of the ruling party in the State.
He also engaged in serial human rights violation in abuse of his oath of office and position as the Chief Law Officer of Akwa Ibom State.
As Attorney General, Nwoko SAN ensured that over a dozen people in Akwa Ibom State were arrested and prosecuted on ridiculous charges for merely speaking on social media against government officials. He cannot now claim human rights when he does not believe in it.
I had cause to defend a number of persons who were victims of state persecution during his reign as Attorney General of Akwa Ibom State. He has a terrible human rights record. How about citizens who were detained for weeks and months under his leadership as Attorney General.
Besides, EFCC has not violated any of his rights at this moment.

I know as a fact that there has been dispirited efforts to truncate any form of investigation of corruption by anti-corruption agencies in Akwa Ibom State.
As Attorney General, he filed frivolous lawsuits to bar EFCC from investigating state officials. He has been running from one court to another to truncate investigation of corrupt officials. Let him face the law. If the court says he is innocent, so be it.
It took my intervention before one of the frivolous injunctions he sought and obtained against anti-graft agencies was vacated by a Judge of the Akwa Ibom State High Court.
Mr Nwoko then refiled the same case at the Federal High Court claiming that EFCC, ICPC and the Police do not have the power to investigate the finances of Akwa Ibom State.

In Akwa Ibom, they don't give EFCC and ICPC access to documents.
Nwoko himself doesn't believe in investigation before trial. He didn't implement that policy when he served as the Attorney General. In Nigeria, we only remember human rights when members of the ruling elites are involved.

He should carry his cross.
He does not believe in the rule of law. I will say this before any authority in this country without apology. In any event, there's no big deal in his arrest.
I do not want to say much about his alleged indictment in the ongoing case involving the immediate past President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).
But it will be of interest to Akwa Ibom people to know how and why a serving Attorney General allegedly received millions of Naira into his personal account.

Signed:
INIBEHE EFFIONG ESQ.

It is becoming embarrassing and at the same time increasingly difficult for young people to write and express themselves properly when chatting or communicating with someone on social media.
Proper communication should not be so difficult, especially when you are chatting with someone you are not very familiar with.

How do you begin a conversation with someone with irritating usages like “sup”, “hw ws ur nyt”, “GM”, “aait” and the likes? It is offensive.
It is a way of signaling that you're not prepared for important conversation.

If you send messages to me using those fragmented, esoteric, casual, mundane and irritating usages, I will likely ignore or treat your messages with levity.

Pro-government minions are in the habit of invoking the name of the Great Gani Fawehinmi in their desperation to scandalize other activists. The same Gani was despised by successive regimes. If Gani were still alive, these sycophants will abuse him. Gani was accused falsely too.
Dr. Olu Onagoruwa betrayed Gani, his friend, and accepted to serve as Attorney General to Gen. Abacha. When he opted out, Abacha junta murdered his son who was working with the NIA. Dr Onagoruwa falsely accused Gani of collecting money from Gen. Buhari to buy a house in London.
Chief Gani Fawehinmi refuted the allegation. On several times, Gani was arrested on trumped up charges, including affray, treasonable felony and so on. In the eyes of the corrupt regimes, he was a criminal. Gani was hated. Attempts were made to kill him. He was despised.

It is all about American interest. The whole thing is a pushback by the US Government.

It is reported that there was no arrest warrant from INTERPOL as at the time of his arrest.

How do you subject someone to extradition without an Extradition Treaty?

This is mainly politics.
I like the Venezuelan opposition leader, Juan Guaidó. I am also opposed to communism.

But it is clear that the sanctions that the Trump administration imposed on Venezuela and the Maduro regime has impacted Venezuelans negatively. It has crumbled their economy.
Saab is being targeted by the US because he was doing a lot to undermine the sanctions. I don't have the facts of the money laundering allegations made by the US. It may well be true. What is certain is that he made it possible for Venezuela to avoid sanctions in a limited way.

Someone drew my attention not long ago to the List. This is a List that was developed as a proposal before those listed in it were approached. I became interested in the Alex Saab's case due to the following reasons:

1. I have a close relationship with Saab's lawyer in Nigeria.
2. The case is of interest to me because of the legal and diplomatic issues at stake, particularly the ECOWAS Court involvement.

3. Someone that I know and worked with in the past spoke to me about it and requested that I offer legal hindsight on it and also tag some accounts.
4. I respect my relationship with people except where there is a clear indication of impropriety.

Ordinarily, there's no way that I will go on social media to speak against the interest of someone that is being represented by a lawyer that I have a close relationship with.

Another lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, described the appointment as an immoral attempt to convey diplomatic immunity on them so that they can evade the prosecutorial jurisdiction of the ICC.

He urged the Senate to reject the nominations.
“President Buhari has by this ignoble appointments reminded Nigerians that he is deaf to their cries and blind to their suffering. No leader in this country in my lifetime has exceeded Buhari’s parochialism and provocative indifference to public opinion.
“These former service chiefs were supposed to be fired long ago, but because we have a president who has an unbreakable covenant with failure, they were retained in defiance of the resolutions of the National Assembly and the opinion of most Nigerians.

I'm before the Lagos Judicial Panel of Inquiry with Olumide Fusika SAN (lead counsel) to represent some victims of the Lekki Toll Gate Incident.

We have objected to the appearance of the Army on the ground that the Rules of the Panel does not cover the Lekki Toll Gate Incident.
We have also raised the issue of the absence of an Instrument setting up the tribunal. How can we go ahead when we have not seen the Instrument setting up the panel? How can we go on when the Rules of the Panel does not cover the Lekki Toll Gate Incident? This is fundamental.
The Army is saying that no one except the panel can cross examine their witnesses because there is no petition as at today against them over their role in the Lekki Toll Gate Incident. This is why it is important to resolve the issues that we have raised.
