Splendid Otel, Buyukada. A hotel with a rich history on one of the beautiful islands near Istanbul. The hotel was built by Ottoman military marshal Kazim Pasha in 1908 in the place of Giacomi Hotel earlier destroyed in a fire. At the time it was also known as Kazim Pasha Hotel.
The hotel in its first years was run by three waiters from the famous Tokatliyan Hotel in Beyoglu - Dikran, Tavit and Onnik. The Splendid was gloriously decorated with paintings by artists like Ratzowski and Mocel, crystal sets from Christofle and furniture from Lion.
Throughout its history it has also been used for other purposes, for example, a hospital during the Balkan War in 1912, or in 1919 as a place where British occupying forces hosted Russian soldiers and their families.
Despite its various uses, Splendid Palace has always been able to pick itself up and redress. In 1929, once amongst his many visits, Ataturk stayed in the hotel for a dinner, he is also photographed in the hotel during a ball held in its hall. (Older photos found online)
I should have added, the hotel is open again as of April 1. Besides me there are maybe two other occupied rooms so very socially distanced.
