To celebrate the movies release April 30, ill be posting New Goodies+Behind the Scenes Stuff Everyday!

👇ART SUPERTEAM MEGA-THREAD!👇
Meet the VisDev ALL-STARS who make @MitchellsMovie look great! ImageImageImageImage
Lindsey Olivares (@lindseydraws) is an absolute powerhouse genius! It was her style, taste+sensibility that shaped the movie's look!

She put together most of the art team+brought out the best in all those geniuses+ put so much love into this movie i'm STILL IN AWE! ImageImageImageImage
Ryan Lang (@ryanlangdraws) has lightning shooting out of his fingertips. He can draw, paint, storyboard+more like a wizard!

His paintings went SO far in both helping shaping the cinematic look of the movie and getting it greenlit!

(PS Support his graphic novel! It's sick!) ImageImageImageImage
Ian Worrel- My Gravity Falls pal, Awesome Filmmaker, and Renaissance Man! Ian is so thoughtful and smart- every piece he did was surprising, wonderful, and told the story. He's a real filmmaker. (His student films are still dope!) ImageImageImageImage
Alex Konstad (@KonstadAlex) is another incredible painting hero we were lucky enough to work with. He really helped shape the robot half of our movie.

His imagination is as huge as his laugh- he also makes Magic:TG cards- and tolerated all my nerdy questions about Orcs. ImageImageImageImage
Tiffany Lam was an ESSENTIAL member of the team. We got her right out of school before anyone got the memo that SHE'S INCREDIBLE!

Her touch with finding the beauty in the everyday was so important to our look. Look at her stuff- are you kidding?
tiffanylam.squarespace.com ImageImageImageImage
Arthur Fong (@artistic_fong) was this total badass production designer that graced us with his prescence!

He still made a huge mark on the movie with his bold colors and unstoppable talent! ImageImageImageImage
Chris Wright is the coolest laid-back surfer guy who just happens to sculpt like a master- he translated all of @lindseydraws characters into 3D. Everything he does explodes off the screen with appeal.

We were so lucky to have him! ImageImageImageImage
Lizzie Nichols is a GREAT painter, designer, and a good idea machine! She's smart as hell and can paint like crazy!

She designed the Mitchells House and filled it with so many loved up, smart, funny details. She kicks ass! ImageImageImageImage
Jake Panian (@JakePanian).... I mean.... just look at this stuff. Are you kidding me?

What can I say- he can draw like an angel, his composition painting+lighting skills are just- top shelf. Jake is the REAL "Painter of Light" Hahahaha ImageImageImageImage
Lily "The Secret Weapon" Nishita (@lilynishita) can do anything and is a huge part of the movie's unique look. She did so many of Katie's doodles!

We hired her to do lettering- what we didn't know is that she does EVERYTHING. INSANELY WELL. SHE'S A GEM! ImageImageImageImage
More comin!
Yashar Kassai (yashar.cc) is a Spider-Verse All-Star and Robot Genius! His MASSIVE imagination and brilliant thoughtful design regularly BLEW OUR MINDS! A titan!

He's now dropping fire for @Roweyourboatz's TMNT movie. It's gonna look insanely great! ImageImageImageImage
Peter Chan (@pixelpchan) is another Spider-Verse all star and master of the color key! He's "The Silent Assassin" murdering paintings while being incredibly humble.

His color choices are so artful, expressive, and unexpected. Dude is the REAL DEAL. ImageImageImageImage
Alice Lemma (@AliceLemma) kicked ASS as Ch. Designer- then revealed she could animate like a PRO+ended up KICKING EVEN MORE ASS doing 2D anim for the whole movie!

Her playful style and carefully observed design brought SO much love and refinement to the movie! A rising star! ImageImageImageImage
Kellan Jett (@kjettpack) was new to animation and just started hitting home run after home run! Dude is GREAT!

His work is the perfect combo of fresh and filled with imagination- while still being incredibly observational. He's dropping heat on SpiderVerse 2 as we SPEAK! ImageImageImageImage
James Castillo (@Murfish) can DR-AW-AWWWWWW! I would trade my left arm for his chops. (Whistles)

He was on the Ch. Design team and could take @lindseydraws' designs and draw them in beautiful 3D like some kind of beautiful art robot. Amazing! ImageImageImageImage
Sylvain Marc is a HEAVY HITTER who came in at a clutch time in production! His stuff is SO beautiful and incredibly thoughtful and smart! Thanks Sylvain! ImageImageImageImage
Fabien Mense (@fabien_mense) is a guy i've been a HUGE fan of since Catfish Hotel (Look it up- it's still sick!)

Fabien's cartoons are UNSTOPPABLY appealing and inventive and awesome! He did some MIND BOGGLINGLY great stuff! ImageImageImageImage
Garret "Young Money" Lee was new to feature started crushing it right outta the gate! He's SO good!

He paints effortlessly well- these are mostly studies he does on the weekends! What is this kid made of!?!?!?!? ImageImageImageImage
Matthew DiVito's (@mattdivito, aka Mr. Div) hypnotically beautiful minimalist work inspired the HELL out of us!

So we hired him to help with our effects. Dude crushed it! Everytime i opened his stuff it was like Christmas morning!
Ryan Carlson's work is at this exciting nexus of cartooniness and photo-realism. It's truly wonderful!

His first piece really helped crack the Look of Picture for the movie. Dude's work is truly truly exceptional! ImageImageImageImage
Mike Isaak's work is hard to find online- but he was one of the most clutch members of the team. Reliably great, professional, and his work is SO smart and thoughtful!

He drew every car (including the Mitchell car below which I LOVE)+so many sets (like the Mall) top to bottom! ImageImageImageImage
Toby Wilson was our UNSTOPPABLE Art Director. Toby's wisdom, practical knowledge, and badass chops allowed us to actually make the movie! We'd be LOST without him!

I am forever in this man's debt- he fixed everything that was broken and was the best partner we could imagine! ImageImageImageImage
Last but NOT LEAST! DAVE "The Doctor" BLEICH (@dbleich) is a mad color scientist who absolutely FLOORED us with his inspired, brilliant color choices!

We should've expected it from one of the architects behind Spider-Verse's mind boggling third act!

We owe Dave A TON! ImageImageImageImage
That's the group- now I DEFY you- not to be hyped at what this incredible group of artists and HUMANS put together- i love all these people and they all put everything they have into the movie.
Follow all these champions to bless your timeline.

I was lucky enough to go to the Calarts Character Animation Student Showcase- and the films were SO WONDERFUL!

HIRE THESE KIDS, THEY'RE AMAZING!

Here are a few favorites:

Crossing by Xai Yaj.
This one is a stunner. The audience was breathless!
The Best Ham Sandwich According to a Fish by Jessica Xu (@zshooes) made me cackle SO hard!

It's beautiful AND hilarious AND insane! My favorite combination!

Ghent Altarpiece by Lewis Tarver (@lewvvk)

This is a first year film, and the style and voice of this artist is SO fully formed and confident + the film is so visually clever and inventive.

I screamed "YES!" after it was over! A delight!

What I Learned from Chris Miller + Phil Lord on #TheMitchellsVsTheMachines

Lots of ppl asked what I learned from my literal heroes from making a film with them for a year: A TON

These are the Top 10 Lessons I learned that I will never forget:

Thread🧵 1/?? Image
1. Fight Against Formula in Every FRAME!

Me+@Roweyourboatz shared this core value with Chris + Phil.

BUT-

The DEGREE to which they examine EVERY single moment + iterate until there's NOT ONE "stock" decision left- truly surprised me!
From Big Ones:
They were the BIGGEST supporters to have Katie draw on the screen, creating 2D/3D hybrids.

The studio occasionally wavered- but Chris+Phil fought hard for it saying "This is what makes the film unique! If we're just copying other movies- why even make it?" ImageImageImageImage

Since the family had already defeated multiple robots- they no longer felt like a threat.

So we invented an elevation: these TERRIFYING robots. The scarier the artists and animators made them- the more it felt like the stakes were raised.

#TheMitchellsVsTheMachineswatchparty Image
If there's no TENSION- the comedy and emotions don't matter- you have to be SCARED for your characters!

Especially in an action-y adventurey movie like this.
Fun Fact: These robots were the only meaningful disagreement Jeff and i had with Chris+Phil.

We liked Stealthbots- they liked Pal Max Plus.

The compromise:
We never mention the robots name in the movie hahahahaha

This we added late + was SO valuable- having moments where Linda+Aaron wanted Rick+Katie to work it out- made the audience want it more!

Plus anyone with a dysfunctional relationship in a family knows- it affects everyone in the family!

#TheMitchellsVsTheMachinesWatchParty Image
It gave the whole movie more emotional reality! Because the emotions of one family member always affect the others!
We had the Furby scene in the movie forever- and it always worked as a funny, psycho scene- BUT- it didn't always work as a story.

Chris and Phil helped shape it a ton (1/3)

#TheMitchellsVsTheMachines was a big studio animated film made by 1st timers.

So when we pushed to make our main character queer, some people got VERY nervous.

But a badass LGBTQ+ artist- Lizzie Nichols wrote *this* letter that made me SOB + will stay with me forever.

🧵1/8
Lizzie(@raptorclaws) was the 1st person we talked to when ppl were asking: "Is Katie... gay?"

Me+co-director @Roweyourboatz are not- but loved the idea + didn't know if we *could* or should?

Lizzie said: "YES! Do it! Are you NUTS? This is a HUGE opportunity!"

Her RAD art:
2/8
We talked to Lizzie about how we could make Katie's character feel honestly queer.

Lizzie said "well my hair is blonde, my eyes are blue, and i like girls. It's just part of who i am.

Katie should be like that.

It should just feel *normal.* "
