Should I livetweet Forrest Gump right now? #Gump2021
Greenbow, Alabama doesn't actually exist but the shoot for his childhood home occurred in Savannah, Ga

... now represented by Rep Buddy Carter
Is that scene a commentary on school vouchers #Gump2021
Forrest Gump is a great reminder of the prevalence of political violence in recent American history #Gump2021
Separately as we watch this movie I'm eating chips and guac with @MEPFuller and he thinks you should spread out your guac so you have enough guac for every single chip?

No I'm sorry I'm gonna load up and finish guac on my own schedule thanks #gump2021
You know, there aren't a lot of political messages in the early part of the movie. But Forrest IS running! #gump2021
I'm super appalled by just how much Jenny took advantage of Forrest through the movie and is still not considered a villain #Gump2021
Confederate Flag spotted on the truck that chased Forrest down in the famous 'run Forrest run' scene #gump2021
Gump wasn't that great of a kick returner. What we are really seeing is a breakdown in basic kick return coverage #gump2021
George Wallace did actually see the error of his ways in later life.

"Those were different days and we all in our own ways were different people. We have learned hard and important lessons in the 30 years that have passed," he told civil rights marchers 30 yes later #gump2021
In 2021 Gump wouldn't have waited for Jenny at her dorm. He would have realized she was cheating through a too-revealing Instagram story #gump2021
I have to say: I've never drank a Dr Pepper in my life. Is that a thing in the NE? #gump2021
I was gonna roast Gump for going enlisted but I realized I had a four year degree and went enlisted too for some god forsaken reason #gump2021
I got in real good shape before basic training but what I learned was that the Army isn't about physical fitness. It is about the sort of fluidity and chill that Gump through his personality just mastered #gump2021
I think the real wise point is that there are many different ways to being smart. Gump is actually very very smart. When it comes to hands-on, it's not IQ -- it's competency. And overthinking and intellect is NOT useful #gump2021
Okay we are entering the military section of this movie w a prominent shot of an M60 and Gump arriving in Vietnam. This is the only cheery depiction of the Vietnam War I've ever seen #gump2021
"You must be my FNGs," Lt Dan says

That's not a term still in current military lingo #gump2021
"Change your socks whenever we stop," Lt. Dan says. Some things, on the other hand, are timeless

There is a modern hack of wearing dress socks under your thick green socks however #gump2021
These Vietnam era patrols are done with no real formation it seems #gump2021
The fact that Gump was using an m16 40 years ago and the Army is still using it now is a testament to how reliable the weapon system is #gump2021
From what I can see, and obviously I'm just making a visual assessment, but all of the wounds in Gump's squad were survivable EXCEPT for Bubba's. What terrible luck #gump2021
So Bubba's wound is known as an evisceration. There really isn't even anything you can do from a medical standpoint when it comes to point of care #gump2021
Watching this movie you realize how little has changed in the US military in 2021. For e.g that flashlight Gump uses, and that is ok Bubba when he dies -- that's the same flashlight the Army still uses #gump2021
Lt Dan actually is more competent than the vast majority of lieutenants, or so I've been led to believe by r/Army #gump2021
Gump wouldn't have reunited with Jenny on the Washington mall in 2021. She would have heard him on a Chapo Trap House and reached out via dm #gump2021
In 2021 Gump would have taken Jenny throughout DC on a tandem Revel ride #gump2021
Jenny obviously went through some awful things but she still has agency. She is responsible for treating Forrest the way she did, which was awfully #gump2021
The best scene in the entire movie imho is when Forrest bulldozes Jenny's childhood home. "Sometimes I guess there aren't enough rocks."
Jenny came back because she had no other options. Forrest understood that, despite his limitations. But he didn't care -- he was happy. "It was the happiest time of my life." We could take a page from this tbh #gump2021
"I'm not a smart man, but I know what love is," Gump says. I think this really shows how smart Gump is. A less secure person would have never had the guts to walk out like that #gump2021

I can't imagine how long soldiers had to police call and search for that optic/rifle before they concluded it was missing
There was a big sign at Fort Jackson warning sergeants:

'Lose a Rifle, Lose Your Stripes' -- meaning a very serious demotion and other dire consequences. It is among the worst things a soldier can do out of negligence in a garrison setting
Here's a great piece explaining why:

"Short of actively committing a crime, in the peacetime US military the worst thing a soldier can do is lose a weapon"

Incredible story of law enforcement refusing to compensate a woman despite:

--driving an armored vehicle through her fencing

--detonating explosives on her garage door

--driving through her front door

--covering everything in tear gas

--rendering her dog deaf and blind
You might think, doesn't the constitution require that this home owner be compensated?

Well yes, but also, and more importantly -- no?

reason.com/2021/03/05/swa…
The woman is 76 years old, and was set to begin retirement, funded in part by selling her home

She had found a buyer for her home, but of course the sale fell through after the home was rendered unlivable. She's also battling stage 3 breast cancer

Just returning from book leave! Here's my latest:

Internal docs show that a nationwide concierge medical provider, One Medical, has let -- and in some case actively facilitated -- patients to skip the COVID vaccine line.

Washington State has halted COVID doses to them:
One Medical, a concierge medical provider valued in the billions, set up COVID vaccines for ineligible patients with links to the company's leadership.

npr.org/2021/02/24/970…
One Medical, which advertises itself as a tech-infused boutique health care firm, also had a booking system that in January did not stop you from booking even if you indicated you weren't eligible.

Obviously word about this spread like wildfire.

There remain some serious legal questions about whether the NRA can just up and leave New York. THREAD here:
Any nonprofit doing business in New York still falls under the jurisdiction of the New York attorney General.

And generally speaking, you need the approval of the NYG before transferring assets/dissolving
The NRA appears to be using the 'exit New York' messaging as a way to mask the more important story, which is that they're filing bankruptcy.

MIT study: Moderna, Pfizer, AstraZeneca and other vaccines may not do as well covering people of Black or Asian genetic ancestry as they do for white people

zdnet.com/article/mit-ma…
"Preliminary results suggest that, on average, people of Black or Asian ancestry could have a slightly increased risk of vaccine ineffectiveness," one of the study's authors wrote.

zdnet.com/article/mit-ma…
"[The] weakness [of the vacines], the MIT report contends, which is that they do not use a sufficiently diverse set of viral particles to stimulate the same level of immune response in all people in the population, depending on genetic makeup."

Will never forget Election Day 2016, wandering down to the White House with @swin24 to get some last color around 2 a.m., pressed up against the fence. These were those scenes: ImageImage
@swin24 I'll be back in front of the White House tonight, all night, with @MEvstatieva as we contribute to NPR's live coverage. I hope you'll tune in!
Differences between tonight and 2016: no one is allowed into Lafayette Square up to the White House fences.

And I'm carrying a trauma kit this year when four years ago it would have been considered unthinkable and unnecessary
