My biggest concern about @drdrew is that he pushes harmful beliefs that are not true. Drew believes forced treatment is the solution, yet after 7 to 28 days of treatment, which is NOT enough time to heal, addicts are then excited back to homelessness. latimes.com/california/sto…
/ Addiction and mental health services are just as broken and disjointed as homeless services. @drdrew should know this, but he still shares harmful messages that hurt efforts to raise support for real solutions. Drew has become the poster child for NIMBYs and homeless haters!
/ as a former addict and someone that has worked with homeless people and homeless services all over the country, I can tell you first-hand forced recovery does not work. But the belief Drew pitches that all homeless people are addicts is false invisiblepeople.tv/truth-talk-74-…
/ in areas like Skid Row and the TL, there is a higher percentage of addiction and mental illness. These areas were designed that way, a huge failure in urban planning. But more homeless people are sober. Most homeless people do not have mental illness invisiblepeople.tv/truth-talk-men…
/ @drdrew pushes a version of criminalization, which does nothing to end homelessness, addiction, mental illness, and is a waste of taxpayer money. Police action pushes people to other areas while making it harder to help them. bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
/ We have an addiction problem in America. We have a mental health crisis in America. Treatment services must get more support, work coordinated with other services, AND MUST BE CONNECTED TO HOUSING for there to be any success in ending homelessness.
/ I worked for four years as an outreach case manager in Los Angeles. When we would have a client that wanted to get sober, we would place them in treatment for 28 days, which is not enough time for a person to heal. Then the treatment center would exit them to the streets!
/ When I 1st met Lanny, he was in an abandoned building sitting in his own feces. Lanny was a vet drinking himself to death after his wife died. He would often blow a .48. The moment we got him in housing, he stopped drinking. This is the power of dignity
/ the above thread is what I shared with the reporter on @drdrew. I wished she used my quotes on addiction, but I will admit I have lots of passion for the topic of homelessness and was screaming at the phone at times. She did use my @KimKardashian line, so that's interesting :)
/ the bottom line is LA has historically failed to reduce homelessness. Because of the pandemic and lack of affordable housing, homelessness is going to get worse. @kathrynbarger appointing @drdrew validates LA politicians continue to horrific decisions on homelessness.
/ @LAHomeless is a target for politicians, yet they forget THEY GOVERN LAHSA! @LAHomeless can only create an impact in ending homelessness if LA politicans provide the tools and housing for LAHSA to help people. @LAHomeless needs leaders, not celebrities that spread propaganda
