I want to get back into ##reviewjam stuff, so I'm starting with "Paris Gondo - The Life-Saving Magic of Inventorying" by @rolistespod, a game about everyone's favorite part of RPGs, inventory management! rolistespod.itch.io/paris-gondo-te…
I really wish more games would start with fictional biographies of their authors. Really sets the tone.
I'm not very familiar with japenese ttrpgs (I think the last one I read was Ryuutama?) so this section on how to read the game is pretty helpful. Kinda reminds me of the old "STOP! You're reading this manga the wrong way!" pages in old English translations.
With reviews like this, who can deny the life-saving magic of inventorying!?
Here we come to the crux of the game: play starts where most games end, the adventurers have defeated the evil and now have to cart home all the delicious, delicious loot. Choosing what to take and what to let go of during the journey home becomes and adventure in and of itself.
I like that "Paris Gondo" contains these little scripts for how to work through things like determining tone, safety mechanisms, etc, important things that not every ttrpger might know how to implement successfully.
Loot is what this game's all about, and I like the idea of using dice and cards to represent discreet items. There's something very satisfying about having a tangible card or something else to represent an in-game item.
If you didn't want math in a game about inventory management I honestly don't know what to tell you.
Look, sometimes you try to carry too much stuff out of a dungeon and it just straight-up kills you. I feel like I would make the kind of character who's ship home would sink under the weight of the treasure.
I like that this game has explicit rules for the epilogue, and also some guidelines on how to still "look on the bright side" if your character got eaten by a grue or something along the way.
So that'll wrap up my reading of Paris Gondo, a unique game with a lot of style and thought put into ease of use and player guidance. If you're interested in inventory management or just want to support a cool itchfunding project, check it out! rolistespod.itch.io/paris-gondo-te…
