We are past the point at which news orgs in every state should consider formalizing "pool" systems for contacting the families of victims and perparators when there's a massacre.

Let's minimize the trauma caused by reporting on these tragedies.

1/
One of the worst work experiences of my life was being part of a swarm of journalists descending on Newtown in the hours and days after the Sandy Hook massacre.

Reporters for hundreds of news orgs were knocking on doors, trying for the same thing: humanizing the victims.

2/
Families shut down, understandably, because they were shocked and grieving, and because they were swarmed.

What if just one (local?) reporter knocked, and could say: "I'm here on behalf of the news media. I'm the only reporter who's going to be contacting you about this."

3/
I think, for one, families would be more likely to share their stories. We'd be sending a message that we, as an industry, care about their wellbeing. We'd do away with the circus atmosphere of post-tragedy reporting, which frankly is not conducive to getting people to talk.

4/
Thus, audiences would be better served.

And, most importantly, we'd minimize harm and avoid once again becoming part of the tragedy that befalls a community after something like this.

5/End
Addendum 1: This would of course require coordinating with national news orgs, and perhaps giving national media outlets point people in every state who will be reaching out to family members.

Addendum 2: This should maybe extend to friends/neighbors as well.

I'm in a press brieing by the Washington State Hospital Association

Cassie Sauer, the association leader, opens with "sobering news:"

"COVID hospitalizations are the highest they've ever been in Washington State, which is terrible news to report."
Cassie Sauer says the previous peak was in December, when about 1,100 people were hospitalized statewide.

This morning, she says, it was 1,240 people.

"That number has been doubling every two weeks," she says, but adds "That might be slowing a tiny bit" the last couple of days.
Sauer says, if you have chest pain, stroke symptoms, or serious trauma, go to the hospital. They will care for you.

But, she says, try not to get hurt. Maybe don't climb ladders. Wear life jackets. Get vaccinated. Try not to end up at the hospital if you don't have to.

Washington's "urgent" COVID-19 briefing is underway

Health officer Dr. Kathy Lofy:
“At this point in time, we have the highest number of cases that we’ve ever had, and the case count is accelerating."
Dr. Kathy Lofy says cases have been rising since September, but have accelerated the past two weeks. The rise is throughout the state, and in all age groups.

She says the rise is not a result of more testing, it's a real increase in disease.
Lofy says state officials are now worried that this trajectory will lead to an acceleration in hospitalizations, and hospitals will be overwhelmed.

She says we are back in a "flatten the curve" situation, and if we can't, the state will have to take steps that hurt the economy.

A few notes on Patriot Prayer and antifa, having covered a bunch of events where both were present since 2016.

When I talk to folks at Patriot Prayer rallies, the most interesting thing is how hard it is to pin down an agenda. Simple stuff. What they're FOR, what they WANT.

1/
Patriot Prayer is pro-Trump. Beyond that, they don’t espouse policy goals at their rallies - except one, really. “Freedom of speech.”

When you ask attendees why they’re rallying, it’s almost always that they see liberals/leftists/antifascists as stifling freedom of speech.

2/
When you try to drill down on Patriot Prayer’s beliefs, a picture emerges of a group defined not by what it's FOR but by what it's AGAINST.

Patriot Prayer is not pro anything, so much as it is ANTI-leftists and specifically anti-antifa.

Just spent an hour listening to a reporter briefing with Washington State’s top #COVID19 response officials. Here are my takeaways:

- Wash. seems to be flattening the curve. Even if infections are 10-20% above current projections, we’ll have the hospital capacity to handle it...
...But @WaHealthSec repeatedly stressed that people should not take this as a sign to get "complacent" about social distancing. The virus is still infecting lots of people, and any loosening of social distancing could cause it to flare up...
Testing is still a pinch point. Public health officials says an end to social distancing will require the ability to rapidly test large amounts of people, find out who they've been in contact with, and isolate them. We're not there...

Most conversations about homelessness happen *around* people who are homeless, not *with* them

It's something that's bothered me as I've covered this issue

So I'm trying something to help correct that...

I'm hoping people will help me out

1/
I want people to leave me messages with questions about homelessness

Nothing is off limits

It can be something that concerns or confuses you, even something that makes you frustrated or uncomfortable

2/
Here's how to do it

Leave me a voicemail at: 253-993-5640

OR record a voice memo on your smartphone and email it to: outreach@knkx.org
