As promised another thread was coming. I will try 2 cover again most asked questions. We are going to talk abt profits๐ , market, project-plans,capital. In general what is needed for you to start the project.
Unfortunately I can only talk abt the Zimbabwean market because that is where I'm operating at the moment. Pig production is the most lucrative project in Zim right now. The market is still very good. As long as the prices are in ๐บ๐ธ ๐ต the price are still good.
Even though I have been in the game for only short period of time(4yrs), I never struggle to sell my pigs. So yes I recommend to start the project now! Many are venturing into the field: Remember timing is important.
Remember there is high demand of pork on international markets.
How much capital do I need to start?
There is no answer to that, I suggest you do a research on what is needed to keep pigs. From that research you make your project plan which includes breeds, how many pigs you want to start with, feeds plan, vaccines, water source and.....
.... construction costs. Structures are the most expensive when you are starting. You decide your self how many pigs to start with. Your pocket also determines that. If you start with many just make sure you are able to take care of them.
Because if the pigs aren't getting proper care it only take 2 days for them to lose weight. This will ruin the standard. It's better to start with few and give them 100%attention. It pays off.
For example
To build 10 pens size of 4m by 5m
1.one pen will gulp i bag of cement for floor concrete at a cost of $7.5 per bag. There the floor concrete will need 10bags that is $75. Stones and quarry the guys will look for it
2. Plaster of one pen will require half bag of cement at 7.5 therefore the cost will be $32.5, for 10pens to be built, it will take 20bags of cement at 160usd
3.roofing 10bundles of zinc/asbestos per each pen @ a cost of 8 to 9 each thats 80-90usd appropriately for the roof
4 timber pieces will be around 30 to 50 total at a cost of.....
5. We need 20000bricks at a cost of 25 per 1000 that is 500usd in total
6. Labor or workmanship estimated at 300usd for the whole work
Total cost of building without miscellaneous cost will be USD1157
Market &Profits ๐
There are some factors which contribute to more profits here. Location, prices, product and quality. If it's possible do your project where customers can easily access: near the roads, near the market. Butchers in Harare prefer those who deliver.
It's an advantage if you can deliver to the market. Many in Zim are making sausages, mince and are selling pork meat from their houses. These customers also prefer if u can deliver. It's important to plan on how u are going to make your product available.
Quality is important because fat on the product is a no no. Can you imagine making sausages and mince on fat ! Thts why you must have a balanced diet for your pigs. You might lose customers if your product is not good.
Standard and Profits ๐
Your standard can increase your profits. Remember to calculate the amount of profit from each sell. Unfortunately in Zim my fellow countrymen have been hit by a virus which make them sell products without prices.
If you know your profits, always put your price tag, customers shld not be asking for your prices. Don't follow what others are doing. Create your own brand according to your own standard. Right now porkers start from $2.5-$4.5. There is no justification to these prices.
Pig Industry Board are selling gilts for $325 and some farmers $200, $250, $300. Don't just follow what others are doing. Some are not able to sell their porkers coz they want to sell with the highest price without even doing calculations on the profits but....
... because others are doing it they are just following.
In conclusion do proper research b4 you venture into the field. Find the capital required according to your project-plan. The market is still very good. Big profits margins to gain. Good lucky farmers โ๐พ... J. Shumba

Let me share some important information on Pig feeding per stage.
PIG FEED REQUIREMENTS AT EACH STAGE OF GROWTH
1. Piglets
Young pigs do not take much in terms of solid feed because they get all their nutritional needs from their mothers' milk.
To ensure piglets get enough milk from suckling during the early stages of growth, farmers should give the sows adequate and balanced feed to ensure they produce adequate milk for the piglets. At three weeks after farrowing (birth),
the farmer should castrate all male piglets and start to train them to eat solid feeds. Suckling piglets should also have their sharp teeth clipped, three days after farrowing to prevent them causing injury to their mother during suckling.
In order for pig producers to be successful, keeping their animals healthy is key. To do that, it is essential to know about diseases that may occur in the herd.
All staff working with pigs shud be able 2 spot the symptoms of common diseases & alert the manager/vet as appropriate.Treating pigs quickly with suitable medication z the next step.Prevention is obviously better than cure & having a herd health plan will help 2 minimize diseases
Pre-weaning period 1. Exudative dermatitis (greasy pig)
The symptoms of this disease are skin lesions, caused by an infection of the bacteria Staphlococcus hyicus. In severe cases, mortality can occur, as the bacteria damage the liver and kidneys.
