A strategy for phasing out animal use is not about stopping important research, it is about reducing and avoiding the negative impacts - lab animal use and suffering [2/6]
Public concerns about lab animal use are consistently high, with three quarters of people in the UK agreeing there should be more research into humane alternatives to animal experiments [3/6]
A serious UK vision and strategy to phase out animal use will require political will and commitment from Government departments, industry, academia, research funders and individual scientists, as well as adequate funding and resources [4/6]
This is not a matter of imposing an arbitrary timetable, but it should be based on a realistic, yet stretching, series of defined milestones [5/6]
Without a commitment, focus and strategy for ultimately phasing out animal use in research and testing, the UK is in danger of being left behind by the scientific ambition and leadership of others [6/6]
