OMG Ayano Koshiro is on Twitter! She is an absolute legend! One of the all time great video game artists! You should follow her!!
Do you love Streets of Rage 2? You know, one of the greatest beat-em-ups of all time? Well Ayano Koshiro was the art director on it, and pretty much the chief game designer too!

Full interview with her here! (thanks @shmuplations!)

My goodness, she was only 22 when she lead development on Streets of Rage 2!!
My brother @HokutoAndy and i wrote about Ayano Koshiro years ago in our article about notable women in the Japanese games industry. I should get that article back online!
BTW Ayano Koshiro's brother and mother are both pretty cool too! Amazing super talented game developing family!

Ayano Koshiro (@ayanokoshiro) was the art director on Actraiser 2 (1993), which in the 16bit era meant that she created a ton of sprite art herself!
You gotta understand, this was one of the most visually (and aurally!) spectacular games of the 16bit era! In 1993 Actraiser 2 provided the equivalent of AAA production values!
Here's some wonderful art of the development team behind Actraiser 2 from the game itself! I'm guessing this piece is actually the work of Hitoshi Ariga (@ariga_megamix) who was a teenager when he worked on this game! He would go on to draw the Mega Man manga (and marry Ayano!)
Future husband and wife Ayano Koshiro and Hitoshi Ariga!

I always have so many mixed feelings after posting a long bottled up hot take. On the one hand it's reassuring to see I'm not alone in these frustrations. OTOH hand I feel bad for putting so much negativity out there and making others feel bad (even when I disagree with em)
Thanks for your kind responses. And also, to all the people who disagreed with me in good faith, thank you you too!
I'm a middle child (from a large family of many VERY AGGRESSIVE A-types) so it's my natural inclination to always look for the path of least resistance. It's deeply uncomfortable for me to deal with direct conflict. But that's an important life skill! Image

The original Nier came out in 2010, at the height of the "Japanese games are bad!" meme in the Anglosphere. I'm so glad that awkward (and frankly xenophobic) phase of games discourse is over!
So so so glad this isn't the default perspective in "the west" (ie North America lol) anymore.

I know I sound like I'm beating a dead horse here, but you gotta understand, during those ten years or so of US gaming press (and industry folks!) shitting on JPN games, I was constantly told I was being overly sensitive and crazy for having such an intense reaction against it.

Here's the thing with these memes. Videogames haven't changed THAT MUCH between 2001 and 2021. However games changed TREMENDOUSLY between 1990 and 2000. Image
Look at the jump between Final Fantasy 6 (1994) and Final Fantasy 7 (1997)! So much changed in just 3 years! Games evolved so fast in the 90s! ImageImage
Heck look at the jump from FF9 (2000) to FFX (2001)! I feel like the transition from PS1 to PS2 was the last really huge technical leap between successive console generations.

(Fun fact: FF9 began development before FF8 was completed) ImageImage

Holy moly! I don't think ANYONE had this on their bingo card! Getsu Fūma Den (#月風魔伝) is making a comeback!!

#IndieWorld
The original Getsu Fūma Den (月風魔伝) was quite beloved in Thailand. A cult classic among the Famicom generation!

I said what I said
Haha this isn't really a hot take. I just think that there's good qualities to all of them. That's why every single one is somebody's favorite!
