Officers have just told protesters — who have been here for six days demanding the firing of an officer — that they have 15 minutes to disperse and leave South Station. @timesunion
Scene escalating:
Confrontation between police and protesters in Albany @timesunion
Police have retaken south station area where BLM protesters had been for nearly a week.
Video of some @albanypolice officers without theirs names or badges visible.
It seems like bulldozers are tearing down the encampment of protesters.
Paul Collins Hackett, a community leader, expresses frustrations with police not showing their names or badges, and brings up the tear gas debate being discussed by city council.
Shadale Conner, 23, asks “why are police out here with full riot gear when we just wanted to talk?”
He says he’s upset with @MayorSheehan for not meeting with protesters for the six days they camped outside the south station. “We’re hurting,” he says. “And no one cares.”
Dr. Alice Green, one of the city’s most renowned civil rights advocate and director of the Center for Law and Justice, is here at the demonstration, standing in front of officers.
Scene right now, hours after initial confrontation outside South Station in #Albany @timesunion
Organizer and BLM leader Legacy Casanova, who spearheaded last Wednesday’s march and protest that resulted in peppery spray being deployed by officers on protesters after a window was broken:
Still a stand-off here between protesters and @albanypolice officers as chants and cries continue:
Closer shot here of an @albanypolice officer who has placed tape over his badge.
Officers are beginning to fall back toward South Station as protesters mostly remain in the same general area.
Now protesters are closer to police officers. Scene remains peaceful.
Protesters are chanting, “No justice, no peace!”
Glass is strewn over the pavement where, just three hours ago, protesters were forcibly removed by police officers. Now, some of those same protesters are back in front of South Station, asking, “Who keeps us safe?” @timesunion
Around two dozen @albanypolice officers are standing in the South Station parking lot as protesters shout at them.
Albany County sheriff deputies have arrived at South Station with shields and tactical gear.
As the sun begins to set, some protesters are promising to remain outside South Station for as long as possible, continuing to demand the firing of an officer who injured a woman at a protest last week. Be sure to follow @pmdemola for continued coverage this evening @timesunion.
