But wait, I say
Is there a way
To tell me my alt-text’s ok?

Yep! The tool you seek
Is there under
“Sufficient technique.”
Pick a technique
Fitting your case best
And check it with the
provided tests.

#AccessibleCoffee #WCAG
“at the bottom of the section, see,
Your failing case. Specifically:”

Failure of Success Criterion 1.1.1 due to omitting the alt attribute or text alternative on img elements, area elements, and input elements of type "image"

w3.org/WAI/WCAG21/Tec…

#AccessibleCoffee #WCAG
Shall I consult this specification
For techniques for my situation?

Oh hey. What’s in section 1.1.1 Sufficient Techniques: Situation A?

“If a short description can serve the same purpose and present the same information as the non-text content”

#AccessibleCoffee #WCAG
Situation A, looking through it
There’s loads of techy ways to do it

So many buzzwords in this list
Are rabbit holes I can resist
Because I do know very well
The web runs on HTML.

The one I want in my bag,
Has to do with image tags.
#AccessibleCoffee #WCAG
Using alt attributes on img elements

w3.org/WAI/WCAG21/Tec…

If I were writing out raw code
This would be how I hit the road.
But I’m on Twitter, and this means
This is what Twitter does behind the scenes

#AccessibleCoffee #WCAG
So I got to find the Twitter interface
That lets me put alt-text in place.

Oh wow,
it’s pretty simple now.

I upload an image,
And in my tweet
The pic appears
And right below it
A button that says
‘Add description.’
Sweet.

#AccessibleCoffee #WCAG
(I will point out that that those two words ‘add description’ make much more sense
than ‘alt text.’
alt text is a technical phrase and you have to go look up its definition. Add description is a complete sentence of what you’re supposed yo do.)
#AccessibleCoffee #WCAG
So that’s simple, and quite nice,
It means I don’t have to think twice
About how to add a substitute
For those who pictures do not suit.

Just add description.

#AccessibleCoffee #WCAG
I’m having a coffee and wondering how to invite everyone I possibly can to share this momentous occasion.

I added a picture and alt text.

This tweet passes section 1.1.1 of the WACG 2.1 !!! Screen readers can enjoy coffee with me!

#AccessibleCoffee #WCAG A brown mug full of black coffee sitting on a dusty black su
So. alt-text on this twitty app?
Historically it’s been shitty crap
It was added in 2016
10 years after the birth of the tweet machine.

It’s pretty trash
That a giant site who had the cash
Took ten years to do it.

lireo.com/15-things-to-k…

#AccessibleCoffee #WCAG
And right now, the thing I want to do
Is test if my alt-text went through.

#AccessibleCoffee #WCAG
I turned on voiceover
And I checked
It read out my all text
Perfect

So it exists. And screen readers read it
There for those who need it.
Still, what if I want to see
The alt text on the screen?

Can I?
Not easily on my machine.

#AccessibleCoffee #WCAG
But just for Twitter,
There’s a bot

@ImageAltText

This clever thing
Says it will reply
With the alt-text
Of the image I
Give it. Lemme try.

#AccessibleCoffee #WCAG A cup of black coffee in a brown mug sitting on a dusty blac
@ImageAltText And that worked!
All right. OK.
Enough of WACG stuff today.

I met one standard
I got it done.
Standard 1.1.1

MAKE EVERYTHING BE TEXT

Next accessibility standard, here I come!

#AccessibleCoffee #WCAG
Is there a way then to review
Just how badly I have screwed
Up rule 1.1.1:
‘Have text for everything, everyone!’

Why, yes.
There’s a tool to assess it.

Another morning, another coffee. This is breaking news absolutely essential
Voice control tip: don't pause and say the word ‘to’ and then pause again well using voice control on the iPhone 12 with numbers. The number two Will press the tweet button and tweet out something incomplete.

It’s coffee time again, and I made a gif of me stirring coffee. Let’s see how inaccessible it is.

I’m having a coffee and wondering how to invite everyone I possibly can to share this momentous occasion.

Let me see how far the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines will take me.

#AccessibleCoffee
If I let myself get all caught up
In how much there is to ask
And do to include everyone
I’ll never start this task.

I likely won’t get everyone,
But I can include a lot
So in place of wondering why do this,
I ask myself, why not?

#AccessibleCoffee #WCAG
One thing to help my brain work sweet

Is to break this into bite-size tweets

So with this new bot that I bought,
I hope I won't lose more of my thoughts
In theory, this next tweet’s in thread.
Let’s test it and see if we’re ahead.
It worked. I am replying and rhyming
No more frustrating losing my timing
I will no longer be losing my place
And having to make angry face

Now back to learning how to GIF

Now is a good time to see
About accessibility
To test my setup and see how it runs
And just to make things even more for fun
To live tweet on Twitter
And find all of the things I forgot to consider
Again if this thread is not to your taste,
You do not need to let your time go waste
Mute this Convo, and then move along
And don't watch for all that I find is wrong
The first thing that I note is pretty clear
I switch between my hands and voice a lot
Sometimes it's easier to say commands
Sometimes it's easier to type out a thought
