A thread - data to back up my belief that we need to implement further restrictions in our province, now. Every metric - positivity rate, R value, the age of those being infected - is way too high right now. The variants may not be deadly, but they are far more transmissible. /1
In 10 days, my rural K-12 school had 15 cases (students and staff). Our grade 3 class alone had five cases. I am confident that some cases were due to inschool transmission. We moved to online learning 7-12 for a week. The whole school went to at home learning for 2 days. /2
Several of these cases were variants - thankfully, parents shared this information because AHS does not. AHS was very efficient in notifying me and then notifying parents once they had the correct information. However, each case took longer to process. They are swamped. /3
If you look at graphs that show cases - I refer you to @ArynToombs for the best ones - it is clear that cases drop when students are not in school. If we want to get this under control, we need students and school staff at home for an extended time. It’s the right thing to do. /4
This is not ideal, but it’s reality. Our school is proof that this is not a problem that exists only in large urban schools. Things have changed and it’s time for @jkenney@AdrianaLaGrange@CMOH_Alberta to act. /5
I had to take this photo of the school totals from @SOSAlberta yesterday... It’s up to 679 schools in the last two weeks, as of 22:00 last night. It will be over 700 soon. @AlbertaEd missed an opportunity to shut things down in connection with Easter/Spring Break. /6

It’s 12:20 and I can’t sleep. I’m not afraid of getting sick or dying. For the last 2 weeks, COVID has dominated my thoughts. It’s everywhere I look - social media, television, road signs on Alberta’s busiest highway. I’m headed back to my amazing K-12 school in 7 hours. /1
We won’t have all of our students and staff there because of the fallout of our COVID outbreak. Some students who started the year with us won’t be returning, and I completely understand why their parents have made this decision. The lack of stability is incredibly hard. /2
Every day for the last two weeks, I have received or delivered a message regarding the impact of COVID on on our students, staff, and their families. I have gone for 5 swabs (all negative) and been in isolation twice. My weekends and spring break have been spent working. /3
