These data , from statista & security.org, show we have a real problem with police killings in the USA. First, per 100000 population, the US IS WAY off from other wealthy democracies
Second, the cause of death, overwhelmingly, is gunshot
Third, the statistics vary dramatically by state, but disproportionately impact people of color.
Fourth, they vary dramatically by city. Overall rates in Laredo TX per 100000 are nearly 50X those of NYC.
Much has to do with training. Germany puts officers through 2.5 -4 years. The average in the US is 21 weeks. Source: theatlantic.com/international/…
From the same Atlantic article: german police trainees are taught in depth how to handle many situations emphasizing de-escalating, including how to disarm those with lethal weapons.
Contrast that with the militaristic attitude evident in the language of the acting Columbus police chief last week when discussing the death of #MakiahBryant
From the Atlantic article, in other European countries, training & policy limit the use of deadly force.
Another important consideration is ethnic and gender make-up of departments. The NY Times did a deep dive on this a few years after the shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, MO triggered the #BlackLivesMatter movement.
In that period, more departments became whiter
Some big city depts became less white
In general, forces oversample whites relative to the population, especially in leadership positionss
Finally, data org shows the police are dramatically off balance in gender.

On Jimmy Carter's 99th birthday 🎂, I remember that he was the first POTUS to focus on transitioning to a renewable energy future.
Carter famously mounted solar water heating panels on the White House roof in 1979, which Reagan took down 8 years later. But he did more.
Faced with lingering aftermath of the Arab oil embargo, wanting energy independence, in 1977, Pres. Carter engineered the cabinet level Department of Energy out of smaller agencies, especially the Atomic Energy Commission & the Energy Research & Development Agency (ERDA)
The DOE was to oversee Energy research & development, monitor energy use, and maintain and develop nuclear weapons as the AEC had done.
Pres. Ford initiated the Solar Energy Research Institute, which was enthusiastically embraced and put into operation by Carter under the DOE
Just to add to the hypocritical & privileged RFK Jr, guests coming to his holiday party in 2021 were urged to be vaccinated, and he blamed that on his wife, actress Cheryl Hines.
32 children died in Samoa from measles after RFK Jr visited to oppose childhood vaccinations & his organization pushed a false story that MMR vaccines killed 2 children, refusing to take it down after it was revealed two nurses mixed muscle relaxant in.
In 2021, RFK Jr & his organization rolled out a "documentary" "Medical Racism: The New Apartheid" to try to convince African Americans not to get vaccinated against COVID19. It was filled with the same false antivax claims bet.com/article/z4cjua…
In Aug. 22, Children's Health Defense was kicked off Facebook & Instagram for promoting misleading information.

On July 17, 1944, a munitions explosion at the USN Port Chicago near Martinez California killed 320 & injured 390.
"African-American casualties totaled 202 dead and 233 injured, which accounted for 15% of all African-American casualties during World War II."
A month later, hundreds of servicemen rallied against unsafe working conditions, and 50 African American servicemen were later convicted of mutiny.
They were originally sentenced to 15 years of hard labor but under public pressure were released by 1946.
The uproar over the disaster and court martials highlighted the differential treatment of African-Americans in the military & helped spur Navy desegregation in 1946.

As a physicist, I want to mention some key contributors in my field, beginning with former colleague Jim Stith, past president of the American Association of Physics Teachers, who contributed greatly to elevating Physics Education to research prominence.
Stith is also an APS fellow, a fellow of the New York Academy of Sciences, and a former professor at Ohio State University and at the US Military Academy at West Point.
