Hi friends, this weekend someone pulled me up for something and I want to recognise my wrong and apologise for it (1/4)
In 2018 I wrote a thread about the historical links between the Confederate South and colonial Queensland. In it I referred to racial slurs common at the time and, foolishly, did not censor them as I should have (2/4) Image
You can see the thread here, less the tweet in question which I‘ve deleted so that it doesn’t cause further harm (plus another tweet where I used some ableist language) (3/4)

This was an error on my part and I apologise for any distress or hurt that I caused. I can’t undo it but I can promise to do better in the future (4/4)

Last month I lodged a query at my new uni about my pay and the details of my casual contract. Yesterday I was told that I “won’t be needed going forward” w/o any reason or explanation (1/4)
Three days ago my supervisor praised my performance and offered me work across multiple units. I have received praise from students in writing and I expect that my teacher evaluations will be positive, but none of this matters (2/4)
I have contacted the VC, the Provost and the union, but there is very little that I can do. I was not dismissed. As a casual, I was simply “not re-hired” between short term contracts in what I believe is retaliation for questioning the status quo (3/4)

Thread: I'd like to take a moment to unpack how much work it took to secure a rent reduction during the pandemic w/ some templates for people in similar situations (1/10)
We started by asking for a rent pause, emphasising the relief that banks are offering to landlords. If they're getting a break why shouldn't renters? (2/10)

Our property agent demanded to know how much we spend on food, water & electricity & pressured us to raid our super (3/10)

Hello friends! I want take a moment to talk about COVID-19 criminalisation as state govt's bring in tighter restrictions and dramatically ramp up policing (thread)
Policing & criminalisation don't address underlying social problems like poverty & homelessness. They attack symptoms of inequality w/o addressing the cause. This approach also targets certain groups...
It's critical to note that the first people to cop fines in NSW were sex workers. Rather than ensuring that everyone is informed & provided for, the response has been to slap people too poor not to work w/ fines

I try not to "debate" bad faith actors but it's very important to understand how unscientific and distorted The Australian's campaign agains trans people actually is. So what's "social contagion theory"? (1/9)
Social contagion argues that queer ppl "make kids trans" through social media. The latest version kicks of in 2018 w/ a paper which claims "Reports suggest the share of girls among teens suddenly declaring themselves trans during puberty may be 80%"

journals.plos.org/plosone/articl… (2/9)
Scientists immediately disputed the theory as discrepancies began to emerge. In a minor scandal, the paper underwent post-publication retraction and revision to heavily qualify its claims

If you are angry about this then I encourage you to submit a complaint to the Australian Press Council. Here's a quick thread on how to do that, it takes less than 5 minutes (1/8)
Go to the APC complaints page, scroll down to the bottom and click 'Make a Complaint"

You'll need to put in some personal details and the details of the story, which are:

Thread: So the govt just announced a restructure (read: cuts) to the public service. Sounds mundane but even something as small as a department name tells us a lot about what we can expect. For example, have a look at how the former Immigration Department changed over time
So what's new with this restructure? The short answer is that the govt is cutting four departments, 18 down to 14. The govt says it's not about saving money but to "improve decision making" whatever that means

The first move is to combine the Education Department with the Employment Department. Seems like a big step toward the notion that education is only for getting a job... you might be surprised to know I think that's a hollow idea
