In 3rd grade j-hope was selected as the student representative for an instructional video for his school for the morning exercise routine kookmin chaejo
because he was so good at it. In 4th grade j-hope decided he wanted to learn dance in a more
formal manner. (1/20) #JHOPE
Despite his father being against it his mother supported him to join a famous dance academy in Gwangju, Joy Dance Academy (and the attached Plugin Music Academy) and he started taking classes learning different styles including street dance. (2/20) #제이홉#jhope
In 5th grade j-hope took part in a student talent show at his school. He was asked to dance for it since his teachers and friends had heard he danced
well.
It was this experience that j-hope states was responsible for him deciding that he wanted to pursue a career in performing and dance. He attended all his daily classes at the Academy despite the fact it was an hours bus ride from his then elementary school. (4/20) #jhope#제이홉
In 8th grade j-hope's family were no longer able to afford his dance classes at the Academy. (5/20)
However, the leader of the dance crew Neuron taught at the Academy and having heard of j-hope's family situation and knowing how good a dancer j-hope was he invited him to join Neuron. He was the youngest member of the crew.
From then onwards j-hope started to build a reputation amongst all of Gwangju's dance community, he was known as Smile Hoya. In the following 2 years j-hope went on to win competitions in dance battles with Neuron for his Boogaloo popping.
He emulated the dancer AKIN (Boogaloo KIN), a dancer who specialised in popping and the subgenre of popping Boogaloo in particular. AKIN used to
have workshops/lessons in Gwangju and remembers j-hope coming to them all.
#jhope would take lessons from Neuron and then go give lessons from late evening till dawn. He would often miss the last bus back to his home as he would be dancing well past midnight. He would crash at a close friend's home and then wake up early and go back to practice. (9/20)
In 2010 j-hope's dance teacher recommended he go to an audition for Bighit Entertainment. He was left in the studio with the camera on while the Bighit staff had lunch. He danced for three hours and the staff knew that he would be a special trainee. He was signed, (10/20) #jhope
the first trainee to be signed under Bighit for their new boy group. He did not move to Seoul straight away. On Christmas Day that year j-hope moved to the Bighit dorms in Seoul where other trainees (including RM and Suga) had been for living for several months.
When j-hope moved into the dorms he was the only dancer among the trainees at the time, the rest were all underground/self-taught rapper trainees.
As Bighit decided to the concept change theconcept of their proposed boy group more towards an idol group rather than the pure hip hop concept they had initially been going to go with, several trainees left and new
trainees started to come in. (13/20) #제이홉 제이홉 #JHOPE
This process took a couple of years to finalise. During that time j-hope started to learn more about rapping through listening and watching the other trainees have rap battles in their dorms.
He would join in and he learned how to get better at rapping as well as writing music and producing. He also helped the other trainees with learning to dance. His formal training with Bighit included dance, rap, music producing and writing, (15/20) #jhope
stage performance, acting, modelling and vocal training as it did for all the trainees. As the shape of the trainee group started to take shape they were known as “the group with Jung Hoseok” due to j-hope's fame amongst trainees as a dancer from his days with Neuron. (16/20)#jhope
