I have an old Dell E6320 on which I run Xubuntu. The battery suddenly stopped working. I googled and found this advice for windows from @NCConsumer (ncconsumer.org/news-articles-…) and zippity dee it works ! 
Just to confuse you, the xfce pwer management tool doesn't update dynamically, but if you re run it after a couple of hours you should see something like this - job done!
