Before the world ends apartheid, it first has to name it, and this rigorous 200+ page report by @HRW has done so in a way that is impossible to refute. A historic document, representing a major shift by the world's leading human rights organization. 1/9
.@HRW found that Israel's "policy is to maintain the domination by Jewish Israelis over Palestinians across Israel and the occupied territory." 2/9 #Courage2FightApartheid
.@HRW: In the West Bank, Israeli apartheid includes "severe repression" and "the imposition of draconian military rule on Palestinians while affording Jewish Israelis living in a segregated manner in the same territory their full rights under Israel’s rights-respecting civil law"
.@HRW: "To maintain domination, Israeli authorities systematically discriminate against Palestinians. The institutional discrimination that Palestinian citizens of Israel face includes laws that allow hundreds of small Jewish towns to effectively exclude Palestinians." 4/9
.@HRW: "In Jerusalem, the government’s plan for the municipality, including both the west and occupied east parts of the city, sets the goal of 'maintaining a solid Jewish majority in the city' and even specifies the demographic ratios it hopes to maintain." 5/9
.@HRW: "A Jewish citizen of any country who has never been to Israel can move there or to a settlement and automatically gain citizenship, while a Palestinian refugee expelled from his home and languishing for more than 70 years in a refugee camp in a nearby country cannot." 6/9
.@HRW: "Every day a person is born in Gaza into an open-air prison, in the West Bank without civil rights, in Israel with an inferior status by law, and in neighboring countries effectively condemned to lifelong refugee status, solely because they are Palestinian and not Jewish."
.@HRW: All states must "condition arms sales & military assistance" & "Impose targeted sanctions, including travel bans and asset freezes, against officials and entities responsible for the continued commission of grave international crimes, including apartheid & persecution."8/9
Former US Ambassador to Israel Jacob Lew would like to be credited for "the efforts we led in the Biden administration to keep Gaza open for humanitarian relief," in stark contrast to the failures of the Trump administration. Did Biden ensure more food got to starving Gazans? 🧵
According to the @WFP: "Just to cover basic humanitarian food assistance needs, more than 62,000 MT is required every month." This figure (about 1kg per person per day) is in fact far less than Israel itself calculated was required to prevent Gaza starvation in 2008 (1.8kg PPD).
Israel's own figures, which don't distinguish between food offloaded and food delivered, show 25,190 MT of food reached Gaza in October 2024.
That is, in October 2024, the people of Gaza got less than half the food required to survive. Under Biden.
