Dear Maya, Good luck with your appeal. You have walked a very hard road and I wish you every success. It has taken a century for women’s rights to be recognised. Women are still not recognised as full human subjects by the human rights movement. @MForstater#IStandWithMaya
I can speak out because I am not part of the ‘women’s sector’ or the ‘human rights movement’, at least not with any funding from either. I saw @amnesty, @AmnestyUK,@AmnestyIreland the failure to distinguish between defending rights and promoting murderous fundamentalist movements
It is no surprise that @amnesty was slow to accept women’s rights and never fully accepted women’s bodily autonomy, for instance with abortion, is happy to promote a form of trans rights which erases women’s safety. They could have developed policies to protect both. They did not
But women fighting fundamentalism from the 1990s in Algeria when they were being murdered by people human rights orgs were defending, were accused of being in favour of torture. Sadly the complicity and silence of the big organisations is no surprise.
Human rights organisations followed far behind feminists. Sadly they have reverted to their traditional hostility to women’s rights and failure to ‘balance rights’ to accommodate different rights claims. I hope your appeal succeeds. So many are rooting for you.@SexMattersOrg
