The line “j-hope doesn’t follow the beat; he is the beat.” provides context for how Time functions in Dance - as tempo, rhythm, pattern, accents. How to engage muscles & limbs to follow a beat, highlight accents or flow into the next phrase lies at the heart of dance. 1/8 #JHOPE

In team dance, the emphasis is on precisely landing each move exactly on the beat. Tricky with a fast tempo and choreo that has a move hitting every whole & half beat. In DNA, j-hope’s every move & gesture is synced to the tempo like clockwork. 2/8 #JHOPE

Showing electric boogaloo in his #HopeOnTheStreet, j-hope lands on & moves through the beat, combining popping w/sharp angles, fluid waves & isolations. Popping requires contracting body muscles to create a pop/jerk, in time with the rhythm. 3/8 #JHOPE

j-hope’s verse in ON is unique in that his moves match his syncopated vocals, which are on the 8th & 16th notes. Since much of the verse doesn't fall on the downbeat, it requires planning ahead to engage muscles to coordinate to the rhythm. 4/8 #JHOPE

Adding a move requires skill & planning. In BOM, j-hope plays with timing to add excitement & texture: delaying the spot into the first turn, to then accelerate into the second one; the head dip accent on the 16th note that only he does. 5/8 #JHOPE

In Fire, at :31 and 1:01, j-hope throws in an extra soutenu turn, creating an exciting visual & rhythmic accent. He has to exactly time the turn to get around to make the downbeat of the next phrase. He always hits his mark. 6/8 #JHOPE

j-hope utilizes his freestyling skills to play with the start of Mic Drop. He follows the rhythm & adjusts his flow in the moment, often using popping moves to highlight the upbeats, or adding footwork shifts to match every down & upbeat. 7/8 #JHOPE
